I was very lucky with my tests for licence applications as I had several people in the medical profession on my books that did things for free when I needed them.
I always remember that I went for a treadmill test for an international licence and the person that was conducting it kept looking at the readout as I was doing it and having strange looks on her face !. Afterwards I said "is anything wrong" the reply was "no it's just that I am normally looking at readings of people that are ill !

OK, yeah... very good!

You know what I meant!

I had thought about asking if it could be done via a phone appointment...

Paul - I'm disappointed at your failure to exercise proper minge-baggery.

The proper procedure is to apply for one of the free RS Clubman licences (which you get with a quick online application) and then use that to access the free eyetest benefit - at Optical Express - if I recollect properly........

You've been out of Liverpool too long

Ahh, well - do you know anyone who's actually tested this theory? Because, ooohhh, d'ya know what I reckon: I reckon there'll be something tucked away in the small print somewhere that says the benefits such as free eye tests only come with a paid-for licence, and not a free one! I may be wrong, but that would seem about right for MSUK.

Anyway, turns out to be a moot point: typically, my nearest Optical Express is around 15 miles away, and, as it's in a city centre, I'd probably have parking to pay for, fuel there & back, plus the time factor - I wouldn't really be saving much, if anything, of the £20 it's just cost me at my local Tesco/Vision Express, which is half a mile away, would I?

Another pointless/meaningless MSUK member 'benefit'!

I get free eye tests because my father has glycoma. Never been asked to prove it.

But harsh to slag the MSUK off just because you choose not to use it. MiniMM makes good use of his Halfords discount, he buys loads of stuff and while we can't claim he's got his licence fee back it's been a useful cost saving.

Twenty five quid off a data logger isn't to be sniffed at either. It's not as if we've got to pay any extra for the discounts, licences would cost the same.

Agreed that some of those benefits may well be useful to some people, if they're things you can make use of.

It's just that, for me personally, I've never found much use for most of them.

Also agree that the Halfords one may well be useful to some. But again, for me, I don't buy much in Halfords.

The discounted fuel looks worthwhile, but I think someone on here looked into it (sorry, can't remember who) and discovered that it's only Esso, you have to have an account, pay up front for your fuel and tell them how much you expect to use monthly.

That may work for some, but my fuel use is sporadic, and the only Esso garage nearby tends to be more expensive than some others, so in the end any savings would be negligible. Again, it may work for some, but not me.

So me having a go at MSUK was, admittedly, more from my own personal perspective!

Does a license require an eye test every year? Or is a bi-annual test - free to those over 60 - acceptable?

If you have a valid medical (i.e one that was completed within 12 months of re applying) then no.

But do the free eye tests you can get if you're over 60 include things like the colour-blindness test that MSUK insist upon?

I have no idea, as the only eye test I've ever had (outside of one done by my GP for a licence) is the one which I've just had done this week. So I have no idea if they would normally check all of the parameters needed for a competition licence.

But if not, and some of those items are outside the remit of the free test, then I assume that's the 'free' bit out of the window?

As I say, I don't know, as have never had to do it before and am not yet quite at the 60 mark. Soon though...

Paul, I think I'm the same age as you, having just had a significant birthday, which meant that I need a medical to renew my licence.

I renewed my licence for this year in November, when the application packs were sent out and didn't need a medical or an eye test, as my last one was still valid - i think you've missed out by waiting to renew?

Just collected my Fiat Panda ‘runaround’ from the local independent Fiat / Lancia specialist and they had 7 Intergrales in - a couple for sale, the rest being worked upon for service etc. Also a lovely little Fulvia HF in the showroom.

It looks like a ‘nothing’ little garage in a sleepy village but always some fine looking Integrales in there.

Cliff - I haven't reached the 'milestone' yet, still a couple of months to go. So as long as I send my application soon, I won't need a medical. However, it seems the eye test is a separate issue, and seemingly because my last one (when it was combined with the medical) was back in 2019, apparently I have to have one?

Ahhh, yes - the Integrale! I was lucky enough to own an early 8-valve before values went ballistic. LHD of course.

Great car - loved it. Not outstandingly fast in a straight line, but the handling was very impressive and it could get round corners better than most road cars I've driven, and I've driven a few.

We went spectating on the RAC Rally in it one time, and when we discovered the stage we'd chosen to spectate on had been cancelled, it was a mad rush on Cumbrian back roads to get to another stage in time to see the cars. It should have been about a half hour drive but was covered in about twenty minutes. The journey left an indelible impression on SWMBO, who still describes it as the scariest twenty minutes of her life!

Sadly, though, as much as I loved the Lancia, it was, unfortunately, afflicted with the same problem that many Italian cars of that period had: on a quiet winter night, you could sit and listen to it rusting!

That said, with values as they are now, I wish I still had it...

There was a Fiat/Lancia main agent near me that had to fit new panels like door sills under warranty on several of the Lancia models back in the day.

I went on a car-buying trip to assist a friend back in the day when exchange rates meant you could buy abroad and sell in UK at a significant profit, and after the pound/$ rate dropped a bit, his attention turned to Europe. He purchased two cars in Southern Germany - and asked me to drive the 8v Integrale back, whilst he used the Maserati Bi-turbo.

In the cours eof the journey it bacame apparent that it was effectively a "no-turbo", as on any steep hill I almost had to push him up....

It still remained a great drive back, for me at least, and the Integrale pretty well saved my life on one occasion when as I was overtaking a truck on a long dual carriageway curve, the driver abruptly pulled out to overtake another truck, forcing me to take to the grass - which the Integrale handled with aplomb, letting me pass at unabated speed.....

Great car.

This problem was solved by the previous Alfa importer, SOFAR, because the new cars sent by the Italians was already rusted. The train was supposed to be direct from Milano to Parigi but they arranged a stop at Pont d'Ain to respray the new cars, mainly Alfettas and Suds.
As to the 16V Integrale I've always been impressed by the engine. But on any track it was outdated by the Escort Cosworth. What an era!

Walkers, presumably…?

Had my Evo 2 Integrale 23 years now … love it .. cherish it. Been reliable, it’s little bit of rust has been properly dealt with. With values going mental, I finally plucked up the budget for a serious tidy-up last year, suspension off, powder-coated, rebushed, underside tidied up and under sealed, new original (not lowered) springs, brake pipes, hoses, the whole McCoy … looks fab, but now I don’t want to drive it! Always gets attention whenever it does go out.
