I was at Brands Hatch yesterday for the WTCC qualifying and complained about the new catch fencing they'd installed at most of the circuit recently!

Seems they probably haven't gone far enough...

I was there for that last year. Can just about make me out in the crowd!

But, as crashes go, I think today's was a lot worse...

They were lucky that the crowd had started to thin out after the second WTCC race finished. There's normally 20-30 people standing at there and it's on of the spots I usually stop at on my walk around the track. I had intended to watch the SEAT race from there but luckily changed my mind just before the race.

We had a car over the barriers and into the trees at Gurston Down today too!

So glad everyone is ok after that it was a massively scary accident. I guess next year there will be catch fencing there and the thing that annoys me most about that is that hundreds of people will moan about the catch fencing.

probably not, its a year to the day since Surtees fatal accident and the GP circuit remains unchanged, remember the wheel went into the spectator areas.

It would be a shame to have a rare occurrence like an errant wheel to result in all tracks(for that is how it would go) being surrounded by high fencing.

On a dirt stock car oval it's expected or a Nascar or Indy oval with very high speeds, but road circuits - preferably not as a general requirement around the full circuit.

On the other hand what irony if the requirement comes about at Brands Hatch because of some offshore dodgem drivers who, perhaps, would be more suited to racing on the aforementioned ovals. Maybe in figure of eight configuration to save time.

Or am I being too harsh?

Looks to me, as the cars are going into dingle dell, some have four wheels on the grass. If the "lead" car is not expecting this"overtaking" position it would seem inevitable contact with the resulting off's are going to occur.
Corner cutting seems to now be the norm ' nowadays, despite threats of penalties, maybe now is the time to become stricter with these penalties before someone gets hurt and also to protect our sport that we all love so much.
