After 2010, the length of success for Ferrari and McLaren sees them stretch even further. McLaren is partiuclatly noted as the first period of over 450 races with a >30% win ratio.

Jumping ahead to 2015, Ferrari has advanced a few records marginally, based on their long-term record.

I started this research after a comment about Mercedes having more races in which to set records. Their rise to dominance started to affect the records after the 2016 season. We have also had reference to the ‘big four’ that came from the Motorsport Question thread.
Through history, the records have been dominated by Lotus, then McLaren and Williams, with Ferrari surpassing them all in the early 2000’s.
After 2016, Mercedes can claim to be in those same circles – and I have decided to add a bit more colour to the table to reflect this so that the impact of Mercedes’ success can be seen.

By the end of 2018, Mercedes has also surpassed Ferrari’s best 100+ race records. Incidentally, after the same season Ferrari did pass a McLaren 400+ race record.

In 2020, Mercedes continued to replace Ferrari as the dominant team in the table.
So high was the level of success, that when you combine the records with the previous incarnation of Brawn then a new 200+ race record is set.

And finally after the 2022 season, Mercedes’ success is obvious.
With the current season lengths being in excess of 20 races, then they are unable to set a 3-year stretch of <50 races to oust McLaren. But they already have the highest win ratio for full season stretches in excess of 50, 100, 150 and 200 – as well as the 250+ category when you include Brawn in the team’s legacy.

So - with all of the records in - does it answer the question of 'who is the most successful team in F1 history'?

Possibly not - and there will always be debate. It is clear that Ferrari's history is long and successful. The still hold the long-term records and it will take some time for Mercedes to pass them.

The history has shown up some interesting periods though:

After the regulations settled down, Cooper and Lotus were the early teams to register success. Lotus' record of 16 wins in 30 races is particularly notable from '63 to '65.

The early '70s shows a battle between Tyrrell and Lotus for honours, and Lotus again has a highlight of 35 wins from 104 races over 9 seasons. An early leader in long-term success.

McLaren's run from 1988 to 1992 of 55% win rate, followed by Williams' 1992 to 1996 run of 44 from 81 (54%) shows a clear shifting of power in that time period.

McLaren's longer-term record over that period is even more impressive when you consider the challenge from Williams.
124 wins from 408 race between 1981 and 2005, and 150 wins from 501 races between 1982 and 2011 would surely be stronger if Williams and Ferrari had not had their two dominant periods.

2009 saw the biggest power shift in terms of successful teams though. Brawn, and subsequently Mercedes, began to set records that wiped the floor with everything previous. The 2014 to 2016 period is without doubt the most successful period in F1 history, and the combined 2009 to 2022 period represents nearly a quarter-century of results that set new benchmarks for all to strive for.

2022 saw a significant reduction in the pace that Mercedes is setting records.

But looking forward, the calendar does not seem to be getting smaller and so new records might come quickly....

I'll continue this over in the main F1 forum as we are now forward looking, not historical.

Mercedes: Will they ever dominate again?

Hard to pick one who was the most successful. But Merc have been dominant in both times they've been in F1. Even if it took them three years to win a race second time around!
