What are peoples opions on these?
I've got one I intend to use in my track-day mini... I know they are not as good as modern steel ones, but in its day this cage was FIA approved and is in very good condition. Cheers! Alex |

The only thing I know about them , is something I read in CCC many years ago when someone crashed a car with one in and it splintered and damaged the driver!

Yeah they are no longer approved for racing...
but for a light weight trackday car its got to be better than nothing... Alex |

For the hassle you need to go through to get a cage into a Mini you may as well put in something legal.
They were banned for racing over 10 years ago... how can you be sure that it has retained its strength over that time? |

yes, it could be better than nothing if you don't have to comply with any specific regulations, but only if it is mounted appropriately (big plates and high tensile bolts) such that an otherwise minor accident doesn't cause it to hit you in the head (don't laugh, it can happen, specially in rear end impacts on half cages)

Well its a full cage and apperars in good condition, no cracks or corroction and its also stright...
Fitting it will be as much hassle as any other cage I am sure, but the advantage is its ever-so light! I'd weld in proper plates and hiT bolts as a matter of course! Alex |

Most aluminium doesn't have a very high fatigue strength, so over time they can deterioate.
If you're doing it because you're cheap, go for it as someone else has said "It's better than nothing". Unless you're doing any serious circuit racing it will be fine for club level events. In australia you have a non-complying roll cage form, a statement from the scruitineer for each event saying they see no reason why it can't run. CHECK with your local mob, the story may be different. If you're doing it because it's light, stop kidding yourself, build a chrome-moly cage it may be a couple of kilo's heavier but the extra strength and durability of steel is worth it. 0.05 seconds per lap is not worth the risk to your safety in the case of a big shunt. |

I don't know why alloy roll cages are banned; I would be very surprised if it is because of fatigue problems. |

You are correct regarding fatigue Dave, However alluminium and it's alloys are suseptible to "percipitation or Age Hardening" which is time related and could result in mechanical properties highly undesirable in a roll cage.
In my opinion it's not worth the risk... |

Adding to that, if you ever sell the car, a non complying roll cage would be a negative point, because most people buying a car want to keep their options open - track days, race, hillclimb etc.
It would be different if the cage was already bolted/welded in. Then I'd probably say don't bother changing it, if you don't need to. |
