Past of the french supertouring championship

I would like to know if some of you know something about the championship.

Has it been a major competition ?
Which season was the most exciting?
How many marks have run official cars ?

L.Aiello won it. In I think a factory Peugeot in '99 maybe i'm not sure. But it was before his btcc title and before his german st title. I think?

I know it was one of the first countries to adopt Class 2 after the success in UK in 1992. It was quite popular for a while with BMW and Audi, Nissan & Peugeot all getting involved at some stage. But with the introduction of the STW, many teams jumped ship so it went into decline and nearly died. IIRC.

Before Class 1, it ran to a 2.5 litre silloutte formula I believe, with Snowbeck Mercedes 190s among others. I have a video of it somewhere, I will have to dig it out and let you know.

French Supertourisme adopted D2 regs since 1993.. before it run with a sort of silhouette - prototype formula, with Citroen Ax and BX Turbo, R21 Turbo 4X4, MB 190E, Audi 80, M3 and so on..

During D2 regs there were these manufacturer:
# Alfa Romeo (155ts) run by Alfa Corse, with not much success, even if they run Alesi for a few races
# Audi (80 quattro) run by Roc competition
# BMW (318iS) run by Oreca
# Opel (Vectra A Gt) run by Snobeck
# Peugeot (405 Mi16) run by Peugeot Sport
# Ford (Mondeo Ghia) run by Ford France

but soon the level decreased and from 1996 there were only privateers entries, and the cars used were BMW 318iS and 320i, Vectra A and B, Pug 405 and 406, Mondeo, Toledo, Audi 80 and A4 (There was also a Volvo S40 with Nilsson who won the only race in which he took part). This since 2001, because in 2000 they started running a new categories of cars, silhouette style with 3.0 engine V6, and the championship returned to an higher level.. makes involved, officially or semi-officially, are:
Peugeot 406 Coupe, Opel Astra Coupe, Nissan Primera MKIV, Ford Mondeo MKIII, SEAT Leon, Toledo and Cordoba, Citroen Xsara (In Belgium there are also Jag X Type and Audi A4 MKI)

I know that this type of car could also be run ( obviously with some modifications) in the Andros Trophy ( the championship of Ice racing)

Last champs are:
1993 Biela Audi 80 Quattro - Roc Competition
1994 Aiello Peugeot 405 Mi16 - Peugeot Sport
1995 Muller BMW 318iS - Oreca
1996 Cayrolle BMW 318iS - SDA Sport
1997 Cayrolle BMW 318iS - SDA Sport
1998 Cayrolle BMW 318iS - SDA Sport
1999 David Peugeot 406 - Gemo
2000 David Peugeot 406 - Gemo
2001 Dayraut BMW M3 Coupe - Pelras
2002 Ayari Peugeot 406 - Solution F
2003 Bouchut SEAT Cordoba - SNBE

It's always amazed or disappointed me that countries (or even continents!!) like North America or France couldn't sustain a ST series, yet countries like Sweden and for a while, even Australia had such awesome ST series!!!

It now seems to be more interesting than before.
The silhouette are beautiful cars, they are a lot faster than the BTCC or the ETCC ones, and there are some good drivers. The season will star in Nogaro during the week-end of 11 and 12 of April.

The main drivers who are currenty announced are:

Soheil Ayari 406 coupe pescarolo sport
Eric Hélary 406 coupe pescarolo sport
Julien Mélis astra coupé team tarrès
Julien Gilbert seat cordoba ab sport auto
Robin Longéchal 406 coupe ab sport auto

More will probably follow.

Who knows how many silhouette are announced in the BTCS ?

I guess the silhouette cars are a lot cheaper than Supertouring (ST)? Or could it be that the silhouette series is more friendly, they will allow coupes to race when ST requires a sedan???

The world calls 4 door cars "saloons". We call them "sedans". Europe calls their "wagons", "estates". The UK call their undergarmet, "pants" while NA calls them underwear. Cheers!

I currently think the most beautiful silhouette car is the Peugeot 406 coupé, is it not ? Here is the 2003 french championship car :

I'm suprised Audi never backed an A4 in the French ST series. Though I see Audi already won for 3 years straight during the early 90s?

Do some of you have images or videos (or links to) from the french Supertouring championship of the late eighties and the start of the nineties.

In my opinion the Seat looks like a real silhoutte/kitcar with the wide body, the Peugeot looks like a (Ferrari) GT.

You are right for the 2001 406.

Do you still think this for the 2004 406 ?
