TV coverage
Interesting article in The Age suggesting Ten are looking to re sign the V8s & expecting competition.
Also quoting costs of covering Philip Island at $500k compared to an AFL game at the MCG at $65k. Another thread suggesting the Brutes will be on 9 in 2006. For those interested in this sort of thing, its makes interesting reading - would attach a link but ..... nor can I fly a F111. |

Yeah I just assumed (wrongly) that disgarded Trackside categories would move over to Speedweek.
I wonder what the other categories moves are going to be for 06. |

An article on V8 website (i think in the reverse grid announcement one) it says ten will be covering the seires, and will increase coverage from 2:30-5:00 to 2:00 - 5:00 and having saturday night broadcasts for all saturday races after the AFL.

Given AVESCO's reticence to allow any other cameras onto a track other than 10's it will be quite hard for 9, 7, 2 or anyone else to tape any other categories running at one of their meetings.

Exactly storyline, about the only other option is to have in car cameras in every car although telling the story of a race with only that vision available will be hard.

Certainly AVE has in the past set-up a separate OB at Adelaide and Surfers.
And have we all forgotten when Channel Nine tried to put in-car cameras into Brock's car in the early years of Group A when Channel Seven held the broadcast rights. |

Adelaide and Surfers however, are totally different stories to the likes of most V8 rounds.
For instance - was In Pit Lane permitted to film at Phillip Island last weekend? (that's a question, btw - I don't know the answer but can guess at it). I do know that other camera crews have been prevented at Wakefield Park, Sandown - even Mallala for the HPDC. |

With TV rights for both AFL and Supercar up for grabs towards the end of next year there will be some interesting negotiations going on. Industry sources suggest that 7,9 and 10 want Supercars but maybe the answer could be a deal brokered similar to Nascar were several stations broadcast different events that they successfully bid for. If this was the case it could only be good for other catorgories like utes, Aussie racers or sportscars etc because the more channels covering motorsport the better chance of coverage. Currently Redmax shoot and package Supercars but there is no reason why they could not produce programs for other catorgories just like they have this year.

I still haven't given up on a Motor Sport Channel for Foxtel in 07....also a rumour going around is in the current AFL deal that Foxtel could be a big loser.

It's all well and good for 10 to increase the airtime to 3 hours per 'normal' round from next year, but whats the point if we will just get an extra half hour of fill? That half hour would be much better spent on showing a support race that will miss out due to no trackside next year......
I do remember Channel 9 putting camera's in Brock's cars, amongst others at Surfers Paradise in 1987 (for a story on Glen Seton). They also did a story on Brock at Symmons Plains in 1986, taking their own camera's and filming parts of the race (Channel 7 were the official broadcaster) for the story. Got these both on tape somewhere. Wasn't it mentioned a while back that AVESCO had finished dealing with 10 for the next contract (starting in 2007) and were now talking primarily with Channel 7. If 7 (or someone else) offer a better deal than 10, AVESCO then go back to 10 to see if they will match it or not (similiar to the last AFL rights deal, where 7 lost out to Fox/9/10) |

im really hoping channel 9 win the afl rights, they by far do the best coverage of the football, channel 10 looks amaturish to me. This would allow the best for the v8s and probably motorsport in general. 10 and 7 would be left with no football allowing more time and money to be spent on motorsport.

The AFL deal is expected be a done deal by Xmas - my bet is 7 & 10 doing 5 games a weekend, Foxtel 3 games. AVESCO will do their best to up the anti - going to be interesting to watch, more of the same from 10 for mine. Other categories are going to have to lift their profile to get coverage, & pay. |

Pity they just show what was between the ads on 10, though, and not what happened during them.... there are some odd timeslips in the Fox replays...

Ch10 don't provide the OB facilities for the telecasts as it's contracted out (Network Video rings a bell??).
The extra OB at Bathurst, Albert Park, Surfers & Clipsal is probably for the on track TV & big screen stuff which only uses the trackside cameras during actual races. |

The OB facilities are all provided by Global. They provide most of the crew and all the gear(cameras, cables, microphones and trucks). But the key crew (producers, directors) are from TEN.

Nine have just announced they have the AFL rights.
http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0...-23211,00.html 7 & 10 have 14 days to counter offer. |

This deal increases the chances of a change in V8 Supercar broadcaster from 2007, I reckon.
The Channel Nine AFL deal is an extraordinary offer. Nine have struggled to break even on AFL broadcasting under the current deal - now they're going to lay out even more. It's a win-at-all-costs strategy, and blows the Seven/Ten consortium out of the water. (It's also a damning indictment on the AFL for rejecting a deal that would have delivered better coverage to the northern states - they've just taken the money and run. But that's for another forum...) The only thing more extraordinary would be for Channel Seven to match the offer. Highly unlikely at best. It leaves Channel Seven cashed up and, Rugby aside, without any winter sports content. You'd expect them now to go hard at trying to get the V8 Supercar rights. (Mind you, it also gives Ten more money to throw at the V8 rights). I reckon this means game on. Tony Cochrane may now get the drive-the-price-higher TV rights battle he wants. |

If the TV rights do go to 7, lets hope Crompton moves to 7 as well, while leaving Diffey behind.

With this HUGE deal done by nine will leave them struggling in other areas and 7 would have their sights on the NRL before the v8s. |

Yeah the good old days of Channel 7. A 1 hour highlights package sometimes shown 2 weeks after the event. First couple of rounds each year were 2 hours but as soon as the arial ping pong started they would reduce it to an hour
