Hulkenberg's first impressions: "Great to drive, impressive down-force in fast corners, massive hybrid power"

It's interesting how all the drivers who did F1 and LMP1 recently, regardless of the direction (LMP1 to F1 or F1 to LMP1) mentioned the great downforce of the LMP1 cars. Lotterer even seemed disappointed with F1's downforce levels.

Didn't Wurz have a Twitter-spat with some F1 journalist who wrongly assumed that F1 cars made more downforce a couple of years ago? Since then the gap has probably got bigger. It makes sense - prototypes have the whole body to make downforce from (minus BHH obviously...) whereas F1 cars have less surface area to work with.

Interesting trends. In the past, whenever prototypes got close or surpassed F1 in performance, the FIA would do something to limit the sports cars. Now, with their hand in the WEC, it appears they are more likely to allow the prototypes to excel.
Let's hope anyway! |

Erm, it was their hand that brought down the last WSC, so I wouldn't be too excited about that - just enjoy it whilst it lasts!

I did an interview with Toyota's Alastair Moffitt for the Dutch motorsport site RaceXpress at this years Le Mans, were he told us that their 2014 Le Mans car ran more downforce then F1's at Monaco.

Thats bonkers F1 is faster because they are allotted more fuel per lap and weigh significantly less.

Weight is paramount for cars that make downforce. P1 cars have alot more grip than f1 cars (especially in 2014), but the f1 cars are ~250kg lighter with the driver and that is a massive advantage.

Hopefully there is no truth in the rumour that Jean-Marie Balestre was cryogenically frozen to be brought back and unleashed upon us again......

Not that the whole RS Spyder ordeal is anything to go by, but if this new 919 update is anything like the evolution of the RS to Spyder Evo, Porsche is going to be extremely tough to beat next year.

I think we've already seen enough in this years' car to reasonably assume that the 2015 919 is going to be fast. Now they need to keep the speed up over race distances...

Porsche definitely had the pace at the end of the season though, scarily quick at Bahrain for instance. |
