Clash of the titans--F1 and DTM?

Well, the DTM turned ITC clashed with the F1 once before and F1 won out. But could there be a rematch? Jean Alesi is now racing in '02. But in '01, supposedly Mika actually took a DTM CLK testcar out for a spin around the racetrack. Could Mika have considered a DTM drive? But if Mika, Alesi and many more other ex-F1 drivers are appearing in the DTM, wouldn't it be neat? Could the DTM give F1 a run for it's money? Or perhaps the DTM could at least serve as a support race for F1? Hey, we could always dream...

F1's a bore anyway, so the DTM would win hands down in my books, but unfortunately F1 has the better TV coverage...

You couldn't possibly have the DTM supporting the F1 - you must have read the rules, the support races are not allowed to have better racing than what's supposed to be the main event

Hmm - any word on whether the BRDC fifties sports cars are being allowed back by Bernie?

I've mentioned it before, but the old Procar BMW M1 series was always worth watching when it supported the GPs in 1979/80. And of course at that time, the M1 was one of the eligible cars for the DRM, along with those wonderful Zakspeed Capris and wide-bodied BMW 320s.

okay, okay, I love touring cars and all the previously mentioned drivers, but how successful were these other drives anyways? Jean Alesi is probably the only "semi-successful" F1 driver of the DTM bunch. He won just one race, but managed to stay employed for 8 years in F1? That's more than these other ex-F1 DTM drivers have combined??

But to have Mika Hakinnen race in the DTM, now that would be a major coup. Could we steal more fans away? OTOH, it wouldn't be that interesting since Alesi and Mika would be on the same MB team.

Maybe MB should once again have a special celebrity race, using C-Class sedans, like they did back in early 90s with the 190E!!

Uh, may I suggest that before his near-fatal accident, Karl Wendlinger was regarded as anything but second-division in Formula 1.

As for ex-F1 drivers who competed in the DTM, I seem to recall some bloke called Keke Rosberg being involved relatively recently.

I reckon Michael Schumacher would be a likely DTM candidate if and when he hangs up his F1 helmet.

Alfa Fan has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Damon Hill has been linked with the DTM as well. If in 5-6 years Schumacher does join, it would great to have him and Hill fighting in equal machines. I get the feeling there could be one last chapter in the Schumacher/Hill saga.

Haha, but this year the historic grand prix cars will be supporting. They are more interesting than the new F1 cars. Sliding, overtaking, on-the-limit fun, the list goes on.....

ITC (nee old DTM) had loads of ex F1 drivers in it, but still died a horrible death.

F1 is very dull at the moment but DTM will never be more popular. Thats just absurd.

If there is one series that has the potential to become a world series then it has to be DTM. Would be quite spectacular, however is there room for another major 4 wheel circuit series?

If it is to become worldwide, costs need contained, just looked at all the rows about aerodynamics this year...nothing lasts going on like that.

It's a great shame the TGP's are not supporting the GP again this year, but then once again we come down to better racing!!!

It would be even cooler if Honda/Acura race the rumored DTM RSX. Ditto for the Toyota/Lexus, IS300!!

Remember, Michael Schumacher competed in one DTM round in the late 1980's I think, but that, of coruse, was before the ITC.

ITC died because it went International I believe.

And talking about ex-F1 drivers in DTM, I remember Nannini, Lehto, Rosberg, etc.

I thought that Bernie was the one who influenced or forced the FIA to make the ITC international? So part or most of the blame should be placed on Bernie?

Personally, I thought it was really cool that the Mercedes had guest drivers drive one of their cars and that the country's flag was placed on the rear corner of the car. That was definitely quite a classy idea!
