Heard a rumour that the Yaris rally car is a South African rally championship S2000 with a turbo 1600 fitted. So really it's just an engine test bed and not a massive project starting from scratch, if this is true.

According to Mike, the exhaust could be used to interact with the exit flow from the front wing/diffuser area. However, the interaction would certainly be small.

Made an addendum this morning acknowledging that ultimately the source material (video imagery) is slim...

"Playing Devil's Advocate on the morning of the 26th; though how much exhaust pressure can be expected if Toyota are running some sort of exhaust recovery system (I must admit I haven't read any of the pre-season PR material, have they said in general what systems they are running this year?)? And other eyes place the exhaust coming from its usual location (engine cover)...but we'll know in a couple of days what's going on..."

No exhaust ERS for Toyota.

They have already revealed that they will run a KERS on each axle.

After the TS030 HYBRID established TOYOTA Racing as a pioneer in the field of hybrid powertrains for motorsport, its successor, the TS040 HYBRID, takes the technology to the next level.

The addition of an Aisin AW motor/generator on the front axle, in combination with the DENSO unit at the rear, means the TOYOTA HYBRID System - Racing now provides power to all four wheels.

I do wonder however if this is indeed an exhaust outlet. There is no apparent heat-protection coating around that "outlet". It's however hard to tell definitely looking at these blurry pictures.

Besides, looking at this other (once again blurry) screen capture, it would seem one can still see exhaust outlets on top of the rear bodywork, as this was the case on the TS030:

The second picture really shows the exhaust, even if blured you can see the metal heat protection with burned edges on it.

That location would make for a super short exhaust. That hold is no further back then the back of the airbox.

No need to wait 3 days. The car will be revealed tomorrow

For those of you surprised by the colour – don’t worry, we haven’t shocked everyone with a 2012-style colour change. We’ll still be predominantly blue, white and red, although the new livery – which will be revealed at the March 27 car launch – is rather different to the TS030.

Oh, I forgot it. It's tomorrow, not in 3 days. I couldn't recognize the date. So I can't wait for tomorrow.

Indeed. That is what the picture would seem to suggest.

This location is actually not fundamentally different to where the exhaust outlets were located on the TS030:

This "outlet" could as a matter of fact be nothing else than the air-jack connector, like on the new Audi or the TS030 that ran last year at Bahrein (see the black spot on the side of the car below the "SO" of the "DENSO" marking):

I was looking at what appears to be the dry break for the fuel cell... I now see the burnt area mentioned before.... carry on.

That makes a lot more sense. You really do not want to disturb the flow on its path to the diffuser with an on-and-off device like the high pressure exhaust gasses.

I'm talking about a draw enhancing front diffuser flow by enhancing flow velocity at its exit. It would be a minimal interaction. Exhaust blown diffusers have been done with much success over the past 30 years of motorsports.

How ever, evidence seems to suggest the exhausts are actually in the engine cover as per TS030.

Yes, draw enhancing front diffuser, but if that hole was an exhaust, you would be enhancing the flow way too late. When that flow from the front diffuser reaches the edge of the floor (on the side), it spins around it and gets sucked under the floor, in front of the rear tire, right into the diffuser. Blowing air under that angle at that rotating flow is just going to disturb it and you will be effectively shutting down the floor. One could argue that it may be a good thing to disturb the feed under the floor when on throttle, so you reduce technically down force on the straights, but that also makes it tricky if you want to do some throttle variations in the middle of fast corners, when you do need continuous/predictable flow into the diffuser. But if someone figures out how to create the exhaust in a way that energizes further the rotation and also does not abruptly change things upon backing up the throttle, I would love to see how that works.
