renniesmill should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
2? intermediate and full wets??

or there are more??

and also, would the wet tyres get worn down and become slicks on a dry track??

i am disappointed by the pace of Hakkinen... seems to me he only drives fast when he is in the lead, or any chance of winning... he doesn't drive like a champion in malaysia, absolutely poor!!!! i cant believe coulthard finished ahead of him when coulthard had spun off 3 or 4 times (as coulthard said in the post race conference)...

maybe hakkinen thinks its too dangerous to drive in rain.
he has disappointed me!!!

Speed should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
[From www.f1racing.net]
As per the regulations, two types of dry tyre and three types of rain tyre will be available at Interlagos

Hope this helps...

renniesmill, I agree, Hakkinen does only seem to try when he's leading. At Nurburgring '99, he dropped right back after those tyre stops, and it ended up almost costing him the championship

Actually, the rain tires are made of an extremely soft compound and begin to blister and come apart on a dry track. This is why on a drying track you will see drivers on rain tires go off-line onto wet areas of the track to keep the tires wet and cool. Once these rain tires wear, even just a small amount, they produce very little adhesion.

Also I agree that Hakkinen was less than impressive in the wet. Alain Prost was the same way, he hated the rain and didn't think it was safe.

I thought that usually there were only 2 types of wet tyres. Intermediates and real wets. Maybe there are tyres for lighter rain and socalled monsoon-tyres at Interlagos...I'm not sure.

Actually there are several types of wet tyres.

Intermediate - good for light rain or a drying track, but not suitable for the dry
Hard and Soft Wet tyres - for your regular rain race and
Monsoon Tyres - for when it is really pouring! However, they usually call out the safety car before the cars get a chance to use these (ie Malaysia)

So there are 4 types of wet weather (or 3, if you don't count intermediates) tyres available to a team in a given weekend. It should be noted that the "soft" and "hard" compounds could be just about any two types of wet weather compounds.

and you can have infinite number sets of wets inc. intermediates, right? unlike the drys you are limited to 12 sets a weekend or something like that?
