Future Changes

I know I have all ready started a thread about a new points system but I have made a new thread which includes exactly what I put in my other one but this thread is for all the changes you think should be made in the future. I think there should be a new points system. It should still be 1st-8th who score the points or maybe it could be 1st-10th who score the points. Drivers should only gets the points if they finish the race. There should be more points offered and a bigger gap from first to second, at least an extra 2 points. There should also be points offered for Pole and fastest laps. The should also be a mini race consisting of 10-15 laps with half the points being ofered. Qualifying 1 should be to determine the grid for the mini race and Qualifying 2 should be to determine the grid for the full distance race. It should go as follows:

Friday:
Practice 1
Practice 2

Saturday:
Practice 1
Practice 2
Qualifying 1 (for mini race)

Sunday:
Mini Race-10-15 laps (half points)
Qualifying 2 (for full distance race)
Full Distance Race

Points:
Qualifying
1st in Qualifying 1=1 point
1st in Qualifying 2=2 points

Race
1st=20 points
2nd=15 points
3rd=12 points
4th=10 points
5th=8 points
6th=6 points
7th=4 points
8th=3 points
9th=2 points
10th=1 points
Fastest lap=2 points
or
1st=20 points
2nd=16 points
3rd=12 points
4th=8 points
5th=6 points
6th=4 points
7th=2 points
8th=1 point
Fastest lap=2 points

The Sunday schedule wouldn't work as no TV companies would dedicate that amount of airtime, and sponsors/manufacturers will not be happy at cars burning their cash with no TV viewers!

The new tyre rules wouldn't favour the increased running either.

We can try and re-jig the weekend and create different points systems and qualifying races, etc, but it is unneccesary, all we need is for the leading teams to get their act together and :

a)challenge Ferrari over an entire race distance.

b)turn up with a decent car and wide awake drivers at every race so at least we get some good McLaren/Williams/Reanult/BAR, etc battles.

The way to improve racings IS to improve the racing, which hopefully we will see more of in 2005. That is the way forward IMO.

I agree with Super Tourer, the only valid way to get the show back is for the teams to step up and produce cars that are capable of competing.

Anything else is tinkering to make up for the lack of competition.

I would like to get rid of one-shot qualifying though. With the one hour/12-laps format the last few moments of qualifying could on occasion be more exciting than the race itself and were worth tuning in for. Not with the current system - I think they scored a bit of an own goal there since the one-shot format was introduced (amongst other reasons) to increase TV time for some of the lower teams, if people aren't tuning in then it hasn't worked.

How about this revolutionary format?

Friday (Thursday for Monaco GP)
11:00-12:00 local time, free practive 1.1
13:00-14:00 local time, free practive 1.2

Saturday
09:00-09:45 free practive 2.1
10:15-11:00 free practive 2.2

13:00-14:00 Qualifying (max 12 laps per driver)

Sunday:
4 hours and 30 minutes before the start of the race: Warm-up session - 30 minutes

The race starts at 14:00, with exception of Sepang (15:00), Bahrain and Suzuka (14:30), Silverstone, Montreal and Indianapolis (13:00)

Point system:
1: 10
2: 6
3: 4
4: 3
5: 2
6: 1

I reckon that it might work.

You wouldn't want to change that would you,but it was changed for some reason,does anybody know what it was?(perhaps if they had to do 3 laps in each 15 minute period of qually to answer my own question ).

The weekend should only include one race, to keep that one race special.

There are plenty of other series with multiple races over the weekend. I'm off to watch one of them now...

You'll find it very hard to convince the lesser teams to give up one-lap qualifying. It guarantees them at least one lap, perhaps two laps of coverage uninterrupted by anything else happening on the grid. Minardi and (IIRC) Jordan's opposition last year to the proposed qualifying changes saw us stuck with the current system for this year, because they can approach potential sponsors with the proposal that at least for several minutes on a Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning, their sponsors' logos and trade marks will be broadcast around the world.

OK - I'll bring along a qualifying car with tiny radiators, an engine which will only last a few laps, and tiny fuel tank.

Then I'll use a different specification race car.

Why not? If you want to waste your money on it, it should be possible.

Practise on Friday with 'test only' engine.

Then qually on Saturday with 'race' engine,12 laps,at least 3 laps in each 15 minute period.

Parc Ferme.

Race Sunday.

Could it really be that simple.

Well it would, but you need this - Saturday - 13:00-14:00 Qualifying MIN 12 laps per driver.

Also you need unlimited tyres. Qualifying engines. Absolutley no DRIVER AIDS. Any tyre you like to name as long as it is a slick. (Allow wets for the rainy bits).

For the race:

No refuelling or tyre changes (unless for punctures).

With that I think you might just have a solution.
