VSCC See(ing) Red

I received the flyer today for the VSCC SeeRed Meeting at Donington in September.

Quote:
The diverse nature of the programme is designed to appeal to those new to vintage and historic motorsport. Vintage is a mark of quality, not simply age.
Obviously the club is trying to appeal to a different group of enthusiasts rather than its' members.

What about the meeting attracts you?

Duncan

PS I won't see you there, I'll be meeting lots of VSCC members at the Beaulieu Autojumble.

I'm not a member as you know, but surely this rather puts the kybosh on the VSCC-inspired phrase "Post-Vintage Thoroughbred"?

Yet again poor Beaulieu gets something big clashing with it. For the past few years I've missed it in order to catch every last moment of Goodwood. I think this year I may have to do the Saturday and just perhaps Donington will get my vote for Sunday.

Tim

Don't mention clashes with Goodwood. Last year we missed the Revival Meeting to go to the Cotswold Rally and Madresfield. With the way I feel now? Perhaps more money for Lord March rather than subsidising the VSCC race meetings.

Actually I'm quite looking forward to it, not least of all because it is one of the few meetings my other half will come to and enjoy. Other than Prescott he does not show a great deal of interest in the VSCC as he is an 'outsider' but this has something he will enjoy watching and over the last year he has started to enjoy the proper stuff too.

He would never have come with me to a meeting if it weren't for events like this. Although I think the VSCC risks alienating some members they have to balance that against attracting more. I think they do a good job in tough times.

Thank you for your answer. I'm glad that the Committee's stratagy is successful in encouraging at least some potential new members whatever the effect on existing members.

i don't think they should encourage new members over keeping existing ones, but they do need to strike a balance sometimes

Duncan -

Sorry not to see you with many of us still in VSCC Forum. It is the poorer for your absences.

The See Red website makes it sound pretty good, although I won't be there because I suffer from a strange but total lack of interest in post-war Italian machinery. That is why I am a member of the VSCC rather than some other club.

I was intrigued by the statement: "Many of the cars are unlike many you will have previously experienced as drivers battle competitively with no seatbelts and only rear brakes!" and look forward to this latest ERA weight-saving attempt....

See you in Raspberry Ford at Exmoor!

Peter

All I could find on the VSCC site was "Event information coming soon". Is this another case of "members only"?

The members got a flyer in the last newsletter to a new web site.

The SEE RED site is now live and I think the aim is to get the (northern)* historic fans in. The site is a bit coy about the VSCC link, so it's open to all!!! The more the merrier in fact!

On the VSCC forum the talk is now about the the 3hr endurance Sports Car race - in the dark!

David

(Yes Duncan the poor by marshals will have to be on post 14hrs/day this year !)

*the southern ones may have spent all their money the previous weekend.

I find this extremely difficult to understand. It's as if the VSCC wants to hide itself away from Joe Public and then expect them to appear, as if from nowhere, to support (financially) their race meetings. Or have I got the wrong end of the con-rod.

I'm confused!!!!

What I can't understand is why the VSCC hasn't copied a link on to the See Red site. It must be a bit embarrasing knowing that there is a new site out there with relevant details that don't yet appear on the main website.

Secondly, did anyone notice the new make of car?
Can anyone tell me what a Buggati looks like!!!!!!

See some of you at the weekend - hurrah!!!

Another post on here dismissed the VSCC as "The Old Boy Racers"

So yes (I think) it is a move to get more of the general historic fans - as seen at Coys and Goodwood to go to a race meeting with more VSCC cars. Get them in the door to see the RED ones, they may also enjoy the old Green ones.

The idea is to give the crowd something to see. One could ask why do we financially support Lord March, he already owns half of Sussex, it's because the events are (were?) worth going to.

Some of the club see this as dilution of effort, hence the above debate.

I see it as a worth while attempt, if it works!

I wasn't going to get involved in this debate HERE, I just felt Bernard's post was factually incorrect.

Dear exilegaas

As far as I'm aware the VSCC does not organise either of Lord March's major events, and indeed, has their own events such as the Cotswold Rally and Madresfield on the same weekend as the Revival Meeting.

The point I was trying to make was that if the VSCC have decided to go ahead and organise this event, then why not publise it as much as possible on their own site. It seems so strange that the club is going to all this effort but not updating the website with what would be a very simple thing to do

As for contacting the office - we did, about 9 months ago and made some suggestions that would have helped prevent this sort of situation. Hey ho!

PS Be nice to me, it's my birthday today!!!!!!!

OK, we got a one-page flyer with the newsletter. We (members) have no more information than is available to the general public via the See Red website.

I confess that I haven't taken much notice of the event as it doesn't hold much interest for me - other than wondering how it relates to the VSCC's declaration (on its home page) that :

"The VSCC is primarily concerned with the preservation and competition of sport-cars built pre-1931 and selected Post Vintage Thoroughbred sports-cars (PVT’s) built prior to 1941. "

Note the word primarily. This is just one event of many the club are organising. You can't please all the people all the time, and when they are VSCC people you can't please any of us sometimes.

I like these kind of meetings, I can understand why others don't. But the VSCC do cater to many different tastes, with smaller circuits, trails, rallies, hillclimbs and sprints. i think critisism is good, but best not let it get all consuming.

Happy B'day Catherine!

By 'we' I meant historic race fans - isn't the the name on the door of this forum?

Unless you and 20/60 have a cunning plan for an update to his site - I can see that I'll try to keep VSCC matters to e-mails to the office.

Forums used to be such fun

Thanks from the Birthday Girl

Dear All

Thank you All for your kind wishes, especially those who overestimate my age. It hit me today when I realised that one of my GCSE students was born on the same day that BugEyed and I got engaged, 16 years ago. No wonder I like Vintage Cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS Promise to do this in Parc Ferme next year!!!
