Sponsorship

Has anyone managed to get substantial sponsorship from any business that was not because you work for the company or you are friends with the managing director?

I know that sponsorship is difficult to obtain because of the sheer numbers that are asking for it.

I've been trying for months to get sponsorship and have only managed to get a discount on parts from a local car store.

Any tips anyone

Rob a bank, put their name on the side of the car and get nicked. Next season they might agree they got more publicity than ever before.

Of course there is the downside of not being able to race because you're doing bird.

Hmm, perhaps a re-think is needed.

REALIST has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Tiptop, if you got a discount from someone, you should be giving the tips 'cause that more than most get unless they have the connections you describe.

I got sponsorship in my first year of an "helpful" cash ammount from a local company. Last year I used it to promote my own company, and this year I have 2 sniffs of "helpful" cash sponsorship

To get the season paid for is never going to happen (apart from one bloke I know who got the best deal in the southwest for the FF1600 championship this year). The best you can hope for is either a.) discount or free services you need, eg: Avon tyres or a cash ammount from a business to help you race. Sponsorship is tough the bottom line is you have to give them a return not just stick a sticker on the car. you have to offer a professional style marketing deal. Something you can help them with or deliver on.

Last year I had large sponsor from a company that was not in any way related to me. That alone paid for 25% of the budget. It can be done, you just need a good portfolio, a good package on offer, and don't give up till you have found one/some.

Your not asking big money for FF1600, so its not too hard. Some people think that searching for sponsorhip is ringing 10 companyies. Ring 100, you WILL find someone.

Contacts are very important in raising sponsorship. One of the best ways is to work as a race instructor at your local circuit and chat up the punters (and avoid getting sacked for canvasing) who should all at least be interested in motorcars.
Good luck

It is very good advice for any beginner but it is all really just common sense. You just need to sit back and think it through with the simple question 'why they would want to give you money?'

Don't get too excited!! Powerflex will be supplying me with a full set of their poly bushes. I'm also talking with them about engine and transmission mounts, as they currently don't do them for the E30 BMW and the only place I have found them is in the states. It's not huge, but it's a start and has saved me somewhere in the region of £300 so I'm a happy man!

You could try different ways of getting funding, I do a bit of commercial stuff for a company whenever I attend events and as I result usually get a car to drive and fuel / accomodation expenses covered. For half an hours paddock chat thats not bad.

Also I write books about motorsport simply to help fund my motorsport, its amazing how easy it is to get free stuff by reccomending companies to each other. Tyres especially
