Lack of Mechanical Failures

Most of the incidents in the race were 'offs' but not that many mechanical failures.

Normally at the start of the season there are a few of these. Especially engines.

For example, no machines actually went bang. I was very surprised.

Of course there were a couple of mechanical failures, but what are people's thoughts on this? Have the engine manufacturers got themselves sorted out?

The weather was colder then usual in the race. The engines weren't under the regular stress of the heat. The clutch plates would be the first things to break I thought. Considering many cars entered the pits more then once.

well both of the Jags had mech failures, So did one Minardi and I think there were one or two others so not really that few as compared to normal

Yup...quite a suprise because of no engine failures. Setups! that's why there were so many run offs...teams on intermediate might have had the car setup for wet condition.

There were only a few mechanical failures, which was impressive. Even Minardi got a car to the flag, albeit the spare. Clearly the new rules had no negative effect on reliability.

i was very suprised at the lack of engine failures, what was the reason given for Wilsons retirement, appart from that i cant remember any others.

The point is the first race didn't have the typical 1/2 DNFs due to reliability. I was quiet surprised. I guess that's the result of a mature formula and teams learning it's better to finish than to go out in a blaze of glory.

Or maybe everybody switched to saving-my-engine mode.

Cars have been getting more reliable with every season. More and more nowadays cars retire due to spins or accidents, usually the latter...

Perhaps the reduced testing time Friday and Saturday had a role too. Besides the cool weather.

it seemed Webber and Heidfeld both had suspension failiures - was this due to contact or what?

BAR seemed to be the real mechanical miracle of the race. They went thru a load of engines in practice, but they got it right for the race as both cars finished.

Good job by BAR team!
