Self-introduction
Hello All,
As a result of cruising F-1 sites on the 'net I have just registered for this board. I have been put off by the absence of common courtesy, shallow depth of F-1 history and mindless partisan combativeness on the sites in my own country, the US. I am an expatriate native Texan now ensconsed in the hills of the Northern Arkansas Ozarks. I have been following the F-1 scene in a desultory fashion since it's inception post WW2. Since retirement I have increased my level of attention to the F-1 scene and, at this point, wish to be a part of a group with similar interests, but without the petty bickering too often seen on the net. If any are interested you can find my posting history on the Speedvision F-1 forum as 'TheOldBuzzard' at: <http://insider.speedtv.com/search.ph...777717&start=0> I hope I will be able to contribute something of value to this board from time to time, even if only of an historic perspective. I am not a heavy poster, (OK, I'm @ 200#, but that's not bad on a 6'2" frame) but I do enjoy reading the viewpoints of others. Cheers, Gus |

Hello LD,
You will, at times, find a bit of bickering going on in some of the 10-10ths F1 threads, and they're probably about the same topics that you've seen so many times before... but the majority of the time our members tend to be well behaved and insightful, so hopefully the occaisional flame-bait won't turn you off... welcome to the forum! |

Welcome to 10tenths Lonesome Dove!
I hope you'll enjoy your time here - and I hope you find it worth sticking around! At 10tenths, you'll also find forums covering just about any form of motorsport, so feel free to explore! |

Thanks---
Thanks to each of you for the welcome. From lurking about for a few days I think I will feel quite at home here. I don't mind a bit of controvery, I enjoy it if conducted in an adult and mutually respectful manner. Offhand I can't recall ever learning very much by consulting only my own opinions although I admit to defending them vigorously at times.
Originally posted by garcon [you'll also find forums covering just about any form of motorsport, so feel free to explore!] Since you mention it, can anyone direct me to a forum or fora devoted to self-built 'specials' from the immediate post-war era? Cheers, Gus |

Welcome to the forum LD.
I hope you enjoy your time here. You seem to have a very rounded attitude to F1 and relating to others (virtual or real). Good to have you on board! As for post war self-built 'specials'. We don't have a specific forum as such, but I guess the best forum is the Historic Racing & Racing History. It is a very enjotable place to be. |

Bickering? BICKERING????????????????? Yep we get that. Then we get intelligent discussion. But you cull that out of the rubbish that is spouted on the forum about many drivers. Sadly nobody understood Andrea De Cesearis so he gets no support here!
Actually it is fun and generally friendly. Just don't upset the JPM fans or the MS fans and it'll all be fine. So er anyway, did you see that fantastic avioding maneauvre that HHF performed as he was lapped by a Ferrari? (Who was driving that BTW?) |

FWIW, it was the self-deprecating good humor that attracted me to this group. I find that humor is the best of 'social lubricants'---- excepting those of the distilled sort. Peter Mallett wrote: [Actually it is fun and generally friendly. Just don't upset the JPM fans or the MS fans and it'll all be fine.] Uh-uh. I'll try to be discreet though I have been known to question the honor of one of those mentioned. Should I feel compelled to do so I shall endeavor to be gentle and reasonable yet not tentative. (A rather fine line that should be a challenge ) Gus |

Welcome to Ten Tenths, Lonesome Dove. Love the name, quite possibly the best work by McMurtry.
I'm just a few hours down I-44 from ya in Tulsa. Just spent the weekend in Malvern, Arkansas racing the drag boat. Most of the members here are good people and loyal fans. Join in. Have a good time. Don't take anything personal and feel free to post your thoughts. |

Gidday from australia gus!
As the others said, there's a fair amount of bickering here- honestly though we would ALL be alot nicer if f1 was at all enjoyable .It does grind on the nerves all the problems f1 has built up the last few years. So you've been around f1 for awhile huh?I'll be interested to here your experiences of past years,i've only been in it since '85 |

Welcome, Lonesome Dove!
Its nice to have another Yank on the board-especially a long-time F1 fan. You have a few years on me, I go back only to the early '70's, but if you are like me, its a passion undiminished. We have a pretty friendly group here and I hope we are able to maintain the standards seek. Have a good time and I look forward to your continued presence here. |

Hi and Welcome.
I'm also new to this board and It's a great place to share you opinion or view point. You said your living in Northern Arkansas Ozarks. That's NASCAR country. You must be one of the only F1 fans from around there. Is there a F1 interest from your area ? |
Originally posted by RWC
[we would ALL be alot nicer if f1 was at all enjoyable .It does grind on the nerves all the problems f1 has built up the last few years.] I admit to being somewhat overwhelmed by the welcome I continue to recieve---again I must say Thanks! to one and all. I picked RWC's post to answer because he brings up a subject to which I have devoted some thought recently--i.e., all the controversy surrounding the sport. While the vast majority of my own observation of the 'game' has been at a distance (I've only actually attended a single GP 'live and in person') and the advent of television coverage has been a huge boon to myself as well as others, I think things truly started 'downhill' with the micro-management deemed neccessary to package it to fit a specific programming niche. As with all other ills with which we are beset you can never go far wrong if you 'follow the money'. And the money now dictates how the sport is conducted. Prior to being exposed to the bottomless pit of the pockets of media and BE the competition was 'the thing'. Now 'the show' is the thing and the competition must fit within the framework of 'the show'. So once again we see one of our loves prostituted for the benefit of those uninterested in the game itself, but only to what extent it can be made to line their pockets. Literally before our eyes F-1 has been converted from competition to a 'spectacle'. And those not ignorant of Roman history are well aware of how much just such contributed to that society. I think, in the end, this commercialization will make F-1 a less viable 'entertainment' and will result in it's abandonment by the commercials interests because of public boredom while we, the true followers of the sport, will be left holding a bag of mediocrity. I certainly find myself praying to be wrong. KC wrote: [ Love the name, quite possibly the best work by McMurtry.> Indeed! Though I am currently re-reading some of the works of another Texas author, John Graves, and am again reminded of just how good he is as well as what a mistake it is to consider him of only regional pertinance. EERO wrote: [ You have a few years on me, I go back only to the early '70's, but if you are like me, its a passion undiminished.] As it is for myself, even with all the 'fiddling' with the rules to make a better 'specatcle' of it. Not to worry that I've been observing the scene so long, my recall has never been too good, even as a youngster, and age has not helped either. So what I have wound up with is a 'sense' or 'feel' for the past of the sport that is so subject to one's own perspective that it may have little value outside of the room in which I sit. The apparent perfect recall of many on these boards is daunting to one such as myself. I am shamelessly envious. Naptime , Gus |
