Hoping to get to the US for Pikes Peak Hillclimb next July. Can anyone offer any helpful advice - what to do / not do, etc.

Realise this is a long way from Shelsey Walsh ...

I've been to Pikes Peak and drove up it in a low powered hire car. It was an auto with all the Yank emission crap on it and try as I may I couldn't hang the back out sensibly, and by the time I got to the top it was in low doing about 20mph as it ran out of breath. The temperature change from the bottom to top is amazing and there was snow at the finish. !!

I would like to do this too but it's probably best as part of a larger trip of America which means I should aim for 2009.

That seems like a great idea, one which I'd love to do. You should go for it while it's at the top of your priority list. Some drag racing would good to see as well, as you'll be in America after all.

Yes I have been, and driven up it, but this wasn't at the actual hillclimb week. It just so happened that I was driving through the area and fancied going up. Oh! and there was oxygen ready at the top for all those "fit" people if needed It will make you out of breath as its over 14000 ft, and as you can drive up almost to the top its not so easy to acclimatize in the short time. If you are on your last legs I wouldn't recommend it !!

Building a holiday round Pikes Peak and NHRA at Denver the week before - spectating only !

Really just looking for any good advice, what to do, where to watch from, what to expect weather wise, etc.

Thanks

The race will be Sat only. Other practice days preceed this but are from aprox 4:30am to 9:30am only.

Race day plan to be at the toll gate no later than 6am to get up the hill for a good spot. There are "family areas" as well as those open to drinking. Popular spots are Devils Playground, Glen Cove, Ski Area, and Half Way Picnic Grounds. The higher you go, the cooler it will be.

Bring clothig for layering your options. Expect wind and cold and be ready for rain. Or it might be about 85. Or both. Snow is not likely at the lower elevations but has been a problem above 11k at Devils.

Expect to be there from 6-4pm and fight very slow traffic on the way down. Park off the road quite a way or in designated areas only. Or expect a broken windshield if you are in the dirt parts of the road. Aprox 1/2 will be paved this year but in a patch work format.

Most motels in Manitou Springs will host the competitors so you can stay there and see the cars/bikes up close. Plan ahead as they fill up fast and teams have them booked for a full week. There are other things to do around there in more normal hours of the day.

Pitch a flag. Maybe I'll wave when I go by.

Welcome Todd. As I said before I think I might aim for 2009 as part of a larger trip through the US.
Will be leaning on you for information later in the year
