Carbon Fibre Health & Safety

I work as part of the BARC Race Rescue team and was wondering if anybody has any specific information regarding hazards and precautions with Carbon Fibre. We saw it and drill it mainly, is the dust hazardous per se or are normal precautions (gloves, dust mask and safety specs adequate?

Thanks in advance.

THR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
yea thats adequate...

at uni we were told that once its been cured its safe. unless u grind it, saw it or drill it. then its just like any other dust which u dont wanna breathe in.

the broken fibres are quite nasty too, but gloves is fine for that id have thought.

I would never thought to have asked a question like that. It makes you wonder what you are dealing with at accidents sometimes these days!

Well, when you have to cut or drill it you like to know what the likely risks are!

The shards are indeed very sharp and you really do need decent gloves to deal with them.

There is a legal requirement for the manufacturers of hazardous materials to make a Material Safety Data Sheet available to users. It would be worth contacting a supplier of CF sheets, etc., to see if they have an MSDS for their product.
