What would happen if everyone retired?
If evryone retired, would they red flag the race or would they do a countback? has this ever happened? i was just thinking...

I dont know.... I also have a question though.. What counts as a win? driver crossing the line? or car? or both? or is it the little transponder thingy?

It's never happened in a World Championship GP. I guess that the win would be awarded - on countback - to the driver who completed the most laps.
At Monaco in 1996, when only 3 cars (4 if you count Frentzen in the pits) were running at the end, 5th and 6th places were awarded to Salo and Hakkinen who had been the last retirements (after 70 of 75 laps) of the race. |

Probably red flag it and use the countback.
It's a good question, though. Without the countback rule, would it be whoever had completed the most laps, or the last car moving? Can a driver pick up a discarded part of his wrecked car and carry it across the line on foot? Last edited by Lee Janotta; 13 Apr 2003 at 14:04. |

Is there a provision in the FIA regulations for such an eventuality? (not just F1 but other series as well)

Salo and Hakkinen bnoth completed 90% of the race distance, which is the offical rule as to whether you're classified. Irvine was also classified in 7th, having completed one lap less than those 2.
I think the drivers who've completed the msot laps would ge tthe win, and if more than one driver has completed the same lap, the driver who starts the lap first gets the higher classification. |

I think the one wins who completed most laps. Other drivers who complete 90% take points also.
Is Detroit 1984 is the latest one where all points are not awarded? 6 drivers finished and Brundle was disqualified. (Tyrrell's water scandal). So only 5 was classified, and no one had 6th place on that race. |

The last one to retire would presumably win. In the 1926 French GP only two cars finished with the leader 15 laps ahead of the second place man - pretty close!

I suppose if everyone breaks the car or have an accident and they don't make the minimum required distance, nobody gets any points. (Except if FIA does a bit of magic and claims exceptional cir****ances to not apply the rules)

I believe that Mansell pushed his car over the line to finish once, funnily enough i think it was at brazil. He passed out shortly after he had crossed the line <sigh> i miss the old days!

San Marino '82 saw only the first five drivers get points. Fabi was sixth but was eight laps down on the winner. Winklehock who was originally sixth (and would have got a point) was disqualified.

2nd place at Brazil 1983 was for some reason left blank (Rosberg DQ'd for a pit lane push start). No-one moved up. The 7th place guy was Alain Prost, who missed out on the title that year by 2 points. Imagine if it were by 1... |

I'm not sure about F1 but I believe in UK national racing the rule is that if no car crosses the line during a given period of time then the chequered flag is displayed and the results are take as of that point, i.e. on the number of laps completed by each car when last crossed the line.
I've never seen it happen in 30+ years of marshalling - though there have been times when I have wished that it would. |

I have a half-related question about classifieds at the finnish. In Le Mans it is usual to see mega slow last lpas as cars parede towards the finnish line. I thought they had a rule about maximum time allowed for a car to complete its last lap in order to be considered "running" and, therefore, classified.
I wonder if that maximum rule exists and if some winner has theoretically broken that rule. |
