Micra - recommended tyres?

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what tyres to put on a 94 model Micra? Found lots of pressure recommendations, but the tyres need to be on list 1A from the blue book as well. At the moment the car has four tyres by different manafacturers on each corner, so guess previous owner bought whatever was on offer etc at the time but wonder if it's causing a couple of the car's "individual characteristics."

They don't need to be expensive as plan on getting a new car in a few months and the micra to be retired for road rallies etc, but will be using it for an event in next few months which is why tyres need to be on list 1A.

Whatever you chose I recommend not having new tyres on for the event - too much tread.

FWIW I like Pirelli road tyres, but I've never had them on a Micra type car.

Cheers Adam but need to get them asap, event is beg April so would've thought that would be ok?

Don't want them for event, still road legal at the moment but will need replacing soon anyway but for the event need to be on list 1A.

Think this 165/60/14 H if that makes sense to you?

I am admittedly not too hot with technical stuff, but can tell you they are small!

Are you sure they are 14 inch? 165/60/14 H
That doesn't sound like a standard size for that type of car.

Actually I cheated and didn't go to the car to look and googled and found that...

Sam thinks they're 12 or 13s.

Just go for a half decent tyre that fits into list 1 a or b.
If they are 12 inch you may be able to get Yoko 008s which are a Mini spec tyre.

Your tyre options may be rather limited to meet the 1a regs. Perhaps a Yoko A539 or Falken? As Falcemob has already said, something that fits a mini.

Ok. Personally find it a little frustrating to have to buy new tyres to be list 1a compatible as only plan on doing one / two events in this car but need to do it in order to be able to enter.

Yoko / Falken - which are cheaper...?!

Have a look on blackcircles or in a mini magazine / website. Will be in the order of £200 I reckon.

Thanks for that, you're right - just over £200 for fully fitted and everything done or to have them sent to me it's around £170 (inc postage). Gave blackcircles a call as couldn't do their website form as didn't have all the tyre info here, really helpful and friendly.

I have seen, not once but twice, people recommending something called "Scudo Stunners" as the best List 1A tyre. They are Italian. Not sure if they are available in the right size or are still on the list, but might be worth a google.

From your website I'd guess it's hillclimbs/sprints you're thinking of doing. The Stunners certainly have a good reputation, particularly amongst the kitcar fraternity & they are filthy cheap at £25 a-piece. Sadly, I think 14" is the minimum. Could ring BMTR on 0121-331 1122 to check.

Sprints / PCTs / autotests to be exact, but you have the idea! Ideally want something that's on list 1A, can be used pref day to day and for events too and will keep the current tyres as spares and will get some new rims for the new tyres.

Gave them a call - you're right - around £27. Will bear in mind, thanks.

FWIW I went for Firestones in the end (F700) - it was between them and the Yoko A539s. The sprint's tomorrow so will see how they do, had a PCT last weekend so used old tyres for that. Elected to have a local garage fit them etc and do some other work on the car at the same time rather than order over the net because of time and delivery. I didn't realise though what an "unusual" tyre size I had - so many local places didn't have anything in stock nor have anything at their warehouses!

For a road tyre use Uniroyal but buff them down. Anything else will send you into the boonies if you really try.

Depending what I decide to do this year might buy some road tyres too and keep these Firestones for sprints etc but not sure if worth doing that yet as only plan on doing four / five sprints at the moment. Only kept the best tyre from the old set as were all pretty low on tread so needed replacing anyway, before anyone asks, and tyres were causing some handling issues we think.

Well first day of competition over and tyres seemed fine...adjusted pressures but no great surprises there! Cheers to all for advice even if no-one did mention Firestones

One second behind next car in class, made up 16 secs between first practise and third (and last) timed run and was making up min 2 - 3 seconds per run so could really have just done with some more time. WR on second practise run which was annoying but was pushing it rather than concentrating on where to go and just missed the gate! Doh.

Enjoyed it though which was the main thing, just getting confidence in both the car and what I can do. Back end was pretty loose by the end which hadn't experienced before and whilst the car has some more time in it (a few seconds) not convinced it has much more than that. According to the marshals / race school instructors my lines were pretty good which is also a good start. Seeing as it was only my second event (after PCT last week) and been driving for under a year am not displeased!
