The friend of mine who works at BMW has pretty much guarnteed me that there shouldnt be any problems with regards to turbo or engine life, providing I dont drive at 100% all the time, but that is the case with any turbo car.

all the same. just take it as a friendly pointer from someone closely associated with a garage who have seen a considerable number of exactly the same fault, and someone who sent their car to a bmw diesel specialist who said exactly the same thing, and that the engine shouldn't have survived the turbo failure. if we're going to name drop
i'm known for my kindness on tyres, brakes, engines, etc etc, and if i can't make a bmw 320d last longer than 180,000 on motorway miles then those who don't have the same degree of syncronicity would do well to bear in mind that the turbo failure is one that is almost always terminal for the whole block, and will cost you in the region of £3,000 to fix before you've changed the entire exhaust system and every single filter on the car to make sure you've cleared out all the rejected oil. and that's for the previous evolution of the engine. which is cheaper to replace.
