Mountune Rallycross Engine Article

Not the best edited article I've ever read (actually its hard to find a paragraph without an error!), but an indepth look at the Mountune rallycross engine, as used in the OMSE Fiesta's:

http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticl...-Engine.aspx?3

Worth a read if you're interested in engines and you've got 5 minutes to spare!

Nice find! There's some serious engineering in there - it'd be good to see similar articles for some of the other engines just to see how the build compares.

Funny I could not see mountune uk telling us any of that
but usa things have to be open to the public to see .

Agreed. I'd be interested to see some true (i.e. dyno) power figures for the Supercars. Dyno graphs would also be interesting for seeing the difference in power delivery between the various engines/cars as well.

I suspect that some teams wouldn't want the above information made public though!

There have been a few Dyno graphs over the years, I think even one for the Focus of Sverre. Interesting to see how the peaky and high reving unrestricted group B engines have become, wide power band engines due to restrictor and quicker spooling turbochargers and how electronics contributed in that area allowing high compression ratio and the ALS helping to eliminate rest of the lag. All resulting in instant throttle response...

The difference between an amateur and a pro is that a pro doesn't tell. And if a pro does, he stays moderate. An amateur replaces original air filter with K&N and thinks it means original power figure+20 hp (high-mileage engine).

Remember another thing, though: the real trick bits are never shown. Notice that they didn't really show the turbo? They talk about it some but only in broad details, same with the cylinder head.

Also, as with many modern engine, the trick is in the management. GRX is all about boost available at launch and managing the anti-lag, one which there is barely any details.

Ok, of course they can't reveal any details on that, it isn't an engine building book... But is is still nice to see some of the details being told, take the compression ratio for example, see how that has involved from a low 7 to a high 10... That is incredible for the amount of boost the turbo must deliver... I still think articles like this are nice to read!

Indeed, it was a very nice article that went into much further details than usual.

Too many articles skimp on technical details only to focus on HP and Torque numbers with a heavy dose of superlatives thrown in.

You are dead right Pat.

This magazine is one of the culprits at times, but most of their stuff is good, if a little chewy to read.

Sadly, when most magazines use freelancers these days and don't pay them much, you are going to get this level of journalistic content.

Magazines used to be written by people working there, not any more sadly, any old Joe can write an article if they get the access and then try and sell it.

The mistakes are pathetic though, any decent sub-editor or editor for that matter should be able to get rid of them, and in all honesty when you are asking people to pay money and a decent amount at that both online or in print, that is inexcusable.

But this is the state of modern magazine journalism sadly at this end of the market.
