Actually you can only outbrake someone as you enter the corner on the brakes, hence the term. Track days won't let you overtake into corners which is what you may be thinking of.

Button was alongside Alonso as they entered the corner, Alonso was on the outside, with arguably no room to do anything other than take to the grass or turn in. He turned in on Button who was clearly trying to back out of it and even mounted the kerbs.

A simple racing accident.

If it was into a usual corner, then it would be a different kettle of fish.
Indeed. He went from being behind before the braking zone, to marginally ahead at the turning point. I'd call that a pretty successful overtaking/outbraking move. It's quite rare for an outbraking move to be so successful that the overtaker is ahead my more than the length of his car unless the overtakee gives up the place fairly easily.

Ha! There's your answer. Run Grand Prix to a track day format. That way, there would be fewer accidents, and you can take a passenger round with you. Mirror, signal, manouvre. Mirror, signal, manouvre. Mirror, signal......

Button for me, admittedly with unashamed bias, but he was just outstanding. Just a shame the director wasn't following him as he climb from last to 4th place. Hoping to see some onboard action of this in the future.

90% in pit , 10% on circuit . Not much for onboards

Sorry but I don't believe those percentages. maybe more like 50/50.
I was watching the timing screen and I remember seeing Button take Heidfeld and Kobayashi on the same lap, hoping to see a replay of it, but alas it didn't happen

I heard it was something like 41 total passes, 8 of which were people in the pitlane, and most of which weren't during his "last to first" phase.

Oh it was fabulous for action, the pass rate was mindboggling.

I can only think of 2, perhaps only 3 races maximum, in the last 10 years that provided value like that race?

Button was a man posessed, so good to see a normally fairly conservative driver go for it like that (even if he did get away with THAT incident we've been arguing about for the last 2 days!)

Canada does lend itself to races like this though, Irvine in 1999 coming through the pack springs to mind also.

Why did you make up that figure Andy77, when there were already comments in the thread with the actual numbers?

The Mclaren was deliberatly set up for wet weather (someone on the BBC broadcast mentioned it).

That was a remarkably good decision by Mclaren (or their weather forecaster anyway), but it also took Button to drive it as you say. And it was an inspired drive. It takes real quality to drive for that length of time, in those conditions, and not put a single wheel wrong.
