Changes to sporting regs from 30/6/11
The sporting regs have been changed, with some interesting inclusions!
16.3 The stewards may impose any one of the penalties below on any driver involved in an Incident : a) A drive-through penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane and re-join the race without stopping. b) A ten second time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop at his pit for at least ten seconds and then re-join the race. If either of the two penalties above are imposed during the last five laps, or after the end of a race, Article 16.4b) below will not apply and 20 seconds will be added to the elapsed race time of the driver concerned in the case of a) above and 30 seconds in the case of b). c) A time penalty. d) A reprimand. If any of the four penalties above are imposed they shall not be subject to appeal. e) A drop of any number of grid positions at the driver’s next Event. f) Exclusion from the results. g) Suspension from the driver’s next Event 18.2 Any driver who receives three reprimands in the same Championship season will, upon the imposition of the third, be given a ten grid place penalty at that Event. If the third reprimand is imposed following an Incident during a race the ten grid place penalty will be applied at the driver’s next Event. The ten grid place penalty will only be imposed if at least two of the reprimands were imposed for a driving infringement. http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public...30-06-2011.pdf |

Someone will be hoping that the slate is wiped clean before the next GP.

With the idea of helping the fans to better understand race stragey; maybe the FIA should place big red X's on the sides of the cars for each infraction so the viewers understand which driver is going to drive like a softie.
It will also help the drivers to know who will be giving way on track without a fight. |

Like soccer players on a yellow card, they will have to think twice about that next 'flying tackle'.

This seems really dumb.
Since they can effect some controls over the cars during the race why not just send a signal that saps the engine of some revs/power/torque/whatever for a few laps during the race? In fact why not have a program that takes th input form all the cars and revises settings for any that are deemed to be gaining an advantage ? In fact if they kept all of the drivers bacmk in a virtual reality control lab they could extract them from their seats and give them a good thrashing without disrupting any events much at all. Think of the cost savings. Even better if each event could be run in hologram form with all virtual input from a bunker somewhere the Urals. |

People want drivers to take chances and go for moves, however they are chastised when things don't work out. Why not introduce a drop score system, whereby a driver say drops their 3 worst scores over a season?

However as the thread has been presented in the Formula One forum it seems reasonably to assume that the thrust of the changes is to be discussed with reference to F1. Once adopted there is should be easy enough to implement the main points in the lower series as part of the driver training progamme. |

Apparently, driving standards in the lower formulas are mimicking the antics of the highest Formula just of late. Most of these open wheel formulas are expensive enough to compete in at the best of times, without having the additional burden of 'red mist' moves to contend with.
Too many drivers trying to lead the race in the opening laps, when the only lap you need to be leading on is the last one. |

The penalties would appear quite soft actually.
If your engine goes bang - same penalty as three races of dished out mayhem! The competitor you run into could certainly be excluded from the current race with immediate effect! 16.4(b) The 30 secs is a discount penalty! Makes no reference to slowing down and speeding up. Leaving too much power in the stewards hands is also a problem. Ref Schumacher penalty for overtaking Alonso on a green track! |

It's the penalty you get if you were considered guilty enough to have to stop for 10 seconds in your pit box, rather than having a straight drive through the pit lane, for which you would only receive a 20 second penalty if issued within the last 5 laps of the race. |

No, but a blown engine will get you a 10 place grid drop.
20 secs for a drive thru; and 30 secs for a drive thru plus a 10 sec stop would be a little less than the true value of the penalty IMO. ?Marbot |

The way I figure it is that if you are issued with a drive through penalty in the last five laps of the race, you will instead get a 20 second penalty added to your race time. If you are issued with a 10 second pit box penalty in the last five laps of the race, you will instead get a 30 second penalty added to your race time. Seems fairly straight forward to me. Unless you think that the time for slowing into and speeding out of the pit box before the race enters the last five laps is somehow unfair on the driver concerned, who might instead have benefited from just having a 30 second penalty? |

Quite surprised that the rest of the F1 media world hasn't picked up on this yet.

I wasn't saying that there was anything wrong with the new regulations (they are the same for everyone, particularly if you are a driver that cares to read them). Only that there significance seems to have gone unnoticed.
