Yoong Montoya should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Formation Lap

Could someone tell me why exactly F1 has a formation lap when the cars doing a standing start and have to wait for about 30 seconds for the race to start (at least for the frontrunners). I mean, wouldn't the tyres end up going cold and increasing the chances of carnage at T1? Just wondering, it's probably a pointless question anyway:confused:

To get the tyres and brakes upto somewhere near the tempreture required.

It's a viewing lap also. In rain conditions, it allows the drivers to look for standing water etc.

But the biggest reason must be that drivers can't start cars on their own. Team members must start the car and then leave the start/finish straight

as it happens ....At this very minute im watching Silverstone 94 race.... I bet Michael wishes that the Warm up laps had have been stopped then ....

Warm up laps are very important and needed as a way of making sure all the cars have a fair chance of starting for the real race start .

When I first started watching Formula 1, I didn't see the point of them, but now I know how important it all is, for all the above reasons. The tyres can build up heat, especially with the very specific tactic of weaving during the lap, and the brakes likewise. Drivers can notice if any section of the track is short of grip, and adjust their racing line accordingly, especially if it's wet. It's much more than just something for the fans.

Another reason for the formation lap is to aquaint the drivers with the marshals posts, especially where the flag marshals are positioned.
