Looking for a new PC

Hi Folks,

Not sure if this is the place to post this but really couldnt see any other place for it (probably is but im here anyway )

I am looking at buying a new PC for myself (actually my partner says even though I may not get it til after christmas it can be my present )

But I am not sure what I should be looking at so I thought I would come here and ask people that may know and get some ideas.

Now what do I need it for..

I play some games , mainly Rfactor , and some other car games. Not many shoot em up games (not my style) sports games such as cricket and football as well.
General browsing (Ten Tenths , motorsport sites , facebook and just general news and information sites , emails)
downloading - general TV shows and stuff
video editting - I do some video editting but nothing to serious

Thats about all I need a pc for really so I dont need a huge top of the range gaming machine (allthough that would be lovely) but what general things should I be looking for ?

I found http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Intel-Core-i5...item2eb1451cfd on ebay this morning and at a resonable price its seems to have everything I need but I am sure I can pick and choose a few things like graphics cards and ram and such (will have to email them and ask

So does anyone have some ideas if thats the type of thing I should be looking at ?
any info or ideas would be appreciated.

I got mine on PC Worlds site, look for reconditioned units, you still get a years warranty and the machines are clean install, wiped of rubbish and work fine.

I got mine, a very decent spec for 400 quid, If you already have a monitor and peripherals this wouljd be my idea unless you can build your own of course

The graphic card could be much better for very little money. It's OK for old games but it will barely max out RF and not RF2 when it comes out. You probably don't want to build it yourself but then you're going to want to upgrade it pretty soon.

Hello,
that looks like a nice rig, except for that graphic card. Felix is right, you'll need something a little bit better for future gaming, today's racing games are becoming quite HW demanding... something like ATI HD 5770 should be (at least in the near future) sufficient IMHO.

OK thanks guys , yeah graphics cards is where I am not up to speed.

I am currently using a GeForce 8600 GT and Im fairly happy with it but I am sure there are better ones out there.

I will have a look around and see what I can find before I make up my mind.

Thanks for the info

I ran an 8600GT and it was fine until recently, you had to run on lowish settings to get the best performance really but most of these games are oldish now so not that much of an issue

I downloaded the recommended specs for rFactor and then went to www.dell.com.au and found something that met or exceeded every spec, for under $1400. That was delivered to my door within 7 days and it included a 22' LCD flat wide screen monitor. Very happy so far.

if you kind of know what you want, but dont exactly know, youd probably be best off going and buying a barebones system, here in canada we have tigerdirect.ca - you can get a system thats basically MB, ram, powersupply, processor, case and HDD - basically the essentials you need to get the computer running and nothing more, so you can upgrade with video / monitor etc etc with whatever you want, or if you already have stuff like a monitor, you dont need to buy it.
