Joest back with DTM Audi?
A client of mine who has ties to VAG says that Joest is rumored to be in the DTM in '04 with four factory Audi A4's.
Biela,Werner etc to drive. Anyone else hear this? |

This is new for me and I hope it's true. Joest was the team behind Audi's success at Le Mans. Audi was planning to build a new Le Mans car for 2004, but according to some rumours this new car is delayed to 2005. So Joest has some spare time.

Autosport reprted this too, this week.
Emmanuelle Pirro is quoted too as saying he would have no problem with racing with Audi in the DTM. |

What is Joest doing? Aren't they traditionally considered one of the top Independent Audi teams? I understand Abt has become one these past 5 years. Since Audi no longer has a LeMans team, I guess a DTM team is the next best thing?

Not necessarily an Independant Audi team, they ran factory Opel's in the DTM in the mid-90s, and the TWR-Porsche's at Le Mans.
Would Marco Werner follow them to the DTM, i was under the impression he was paying for his seat in the ALMS. (of course, he could subsequently then be paying for a seat in the DTM) |

Marco Werner isn't a pay driver, i heard the favorites for the dtm seats are Kristensen and Biela, but not sure about that

I'd say if Joest came to the DTM next year, likelyhood Biela and Pirro would be first to sign up, both ex-Audi touring car drivers/champions. Who else? Werner is more of a sportscar driver but may want to keep the audi links up. Cappello? Another former Audi touring car driver. Aiello maybe?

What about ROC? They ran Audis back in the "ST" days? What are they doing these days? Are they going to come back?

I'm puzzled by this. Would Joest really do the DTM for a single season then go back to sportscars with the new Audi in '05? Or run both programmes? Or would Audi get someone else to run the R9? Or is the R9 a myth?

No, Abt is racing at least a pair of cars next year.
If you read about the Audi R-9 in Autosport does that make it true? The GT car is more likely. An even better bet is more tourenwagen racing. |

Abt, as far as they tell the world, are only an independant team. Remember back in the STW Cup, they ran private A4's against the factory A4's.

There are strong rumours that Audi will be back with factory cars next season. According to these rumours the new A4 will be build by Audi Sport. See this German source: http://www.racing1.de/web/dtm/artike...wsID=5879&sid=
Officially Abt raced with private developt cars since 2000, but I think in reality they got support from Audi. This year Abt is sponsored by Audi Bank. Quote:

Audi Sport UK or the factory Bentley team could run the R9 id Joest didn't.

I sewar to god im going to decapitate the next person to call the R8 the R9.
What will be interesting is to see how Audi Sport UK's LMES plans shake out and what drivers they pick up. |
