Bizarre rallycross car pictures

Start it off with Norwegian Cato Andersen's mighty Fiat 850, this guy got the biggest cheer of the day, surprisingly quick.

A few unusual ones from France. Pics come from www.fanderallycross.com, which has some brilliant photos from French championship and ERC rounds from the 70's onwards.

From 1987, Pierre Brunetti, Fiat 126.....

and at the other end of the scale...

There's this Esprit, don't know the driver, but i remember Dimi Mavropoulos and Herbie Brietnader (sp?) racing them;

As for weird stuff, Leyland took some beating;
1300 Gt;

Morris 1800 at Lydden;

Austin Maxi;

Austin 1100 with Maxi engine;

And a 4x4 Triumph 1500;

Well, ok, the Triumph would be pre Leyland i think.
Anyone got pics of the Rover P6 or Vauxhall Viva GT?

Sure that might be Terry Maynard int eh Espit?

That one looks liek Betteridges version with the chopped down rear end.

Dimi's was much more original in shape, not sure it was a turbo though.

Some fantastic shops of Rover development cars there aswell,

Jan de Rooy (DAF 66M subframe with Ford BDA engine) pictured while leading Björn Waldegård (Porsche Carrera RSR) and Franz Wurz (VW 1302S with VW 411 engine) in 1974, AFAIK at Valkenswaard. If it was the Eurocircuit: "Ome [Uncle] Jan" won that ERC round on September 1 although it was the maiden race for that very DAF. By the way, it was my own first RX ever.

You should look on Rune Johansson's site

Some of the BHilcorss cars are amazing, Mk2 Cavaliers, Sierras, class looks really good fun. Think also occasionalle they get guys like Bermingrud and Isachsen to ahve a go for charity races. Looks great fun.

The Supernational class really also looks simply amazing, such a massive variety of cars and coz the rules ahve clearly been the smae for ages there is a huge vat of machines available. There are Volvos, Saab, Mantas, PV's, Escorts, and whatever else you can think of, is simply a great way to run a series. Take note Britons!!

In a previous post i asked if anyone had pix of the Rover 3500 or Viva Gt that were once raced. Well, the photos were under my nose all the time in the Dec 69 issue of CCC;

This was Chris Coburn at Lydden, the Viva had been Rallycrossed in '68 but was been converted for Rallying in this picture.

This was from a Minilite Wheels advert from the same issue, so it might not be the right car, but it looks like a Rallycross machine to me. Can anone shed any light?

Another from CCC, this is Tim Graham's Elan at Lydden.
There's a couple more unusual cars: A Merc...

...And a Daf. Must have been fun on the bends!

That Mercedes 280E was driven by Belgian Paul Grieten from Retie near Arendonk (home of the Glossocircuit). He claimed the Belgian 2000cc class RX title of 1976 with it. I think the pic was taken during the first ever French RX at Lohéac in 1976 (due to that funny fence in the background and the red AUTOhebdo sticker above the right front wheel). During the first half of 1977 Grieten drove a Merc 450SL for RX that became the car of his compatriot Herman Mertens, after Grieten quit RX for good in the middle of that season. BTW, there was also a RX Mercedes 280CE with a 6300cc engine driven by German Mercedes dealer Franz Pickel in the early 1970s, also once or twice seen at Lydden Circuit.

The man in the DAF is AFAIK Dutch Joop Sanderse, the pic must be from 1971 or 1972, taken at Valkenswaard.
