Giraffe138 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Bev Bond

I took a call from Michael Hedger earlier this evening who gave me the news that Gold Leaf Team Lotus F3 pilot & winner of the 1970 British Empire Trophy, Bev Bond passed away peacefully this morning after a long and brave battle with Cancer.

I am very saddened to see this news. Bev was one of the outstanding drivers during the F3 1 litre screamer days. He was certainly a hero of mine in one of the most exciting periods of motor racing. RIP.

Bev Bond

I was indeed most upset to hear from Mike Hedger last night that Bev had lost his fight with cancer after battling so long and hard as he had done for the past few years. Almost 50 years ago now since we first met and there began a long and lasting friendship. I personally will miss his ever-cheerful smile and willingness to help anyone he could who was involved in motor-sport. His great enthusiasm for racing never diminished throughout his life and, his ability behind the wheel in the "Screamer" era can be described as excellent....the highlight being when he won the Gold Cup at Oulton Park in the mid sixties whilst driving for Team Lotus. Rest in peace my old friend,

Harry and Annie Stiller

Very sad to hear about this.

Here's a piece he did last year about raising awareness in cancer in men.

RIP Bev.

Thanks to Tony (Giraffe) I helped Bev with some artwork to aid his awareness campaign and was only too pleased to help. We met briefly at the Gold Cup a few years ago and had a few email conversations and he always struck me as a gentle chap who wanted to help the people and facilities who at the time were saving his life....Totally the opposite view of the person I saw in the early 70's who raced a 1 litre F3 in the typical cavalier and robust style of the time!

Bev did get to drive his old GLTL F3 again and was looking to race Historic FF1600 and raise money at the same time. He came up with an interesting idea for a colour scheme that would stand out... Harlequin!! I Photoshopped the design of the car for him so it's sad that it will not now come to fruition.

Actually Harry, it was the British Empire Trophy of 1970 that was the highlight of Bev's career, a race he won from last place on the grid, beating James Hunt into second place. It pleased Colin Chapman no end.......!

My apologies to all for having got the actual event wrong; No doubt about it that Bev will be smiling when I say that I must be losing the plot and showing signs of my memory spinning off in the latter stages of my race to the flag....the only time that I will be pleased to come last !!!

We of the Historic FF bunch are sad to see a nice character go like this. We were certainly looking forward to Bevs involvement with us in 2014. Not to be...

From all of us I'm absolutely sure. Drivers rep Dick Dixon.
