Lack of banked corners...

Why don't track designers incorporate more banked turns into race track design?

I'd like to see banked fast corners and high banked hairpins.

If you want to see banked corners watch IRL.

Either that or get creative with your Scalextric/AFX set.

Come to Rockingham motor speedway nr Corby UK it's got four of them. One in use with most circuit configuration for nation/ club meetings and all four with the Days of Thunder meetings

I think its a valid point. Couldn't you imagine a circuit with a corner (welll maybe a bit remodelled)like the 'rings Carousel (sp??).

Wasn't a banked corner included in one of the recent plans for a Silverstone facelift? If I remember rightly, the plan to move the F1 pits to Hangar also had some kind of banked new section where Luffield is now. It's probably been ditched along with many other Silverstone plans though.

Err, no actually.
A few of the greatest corners have been banked, "Tarzan" hairpin at Zandvoort, the "Pertalda" at Mexico City.
Tamburello was also slightly banked.

The Peraltada (sp?) at Mexico City was/is impressive. Wasn't that where Mansell in the Ferrari 'did' Berger in his McLaren round the outside?

The odd banked corner could be good. Just make sure it's a right hander.

Edit: Monster beat me to it!

More on the (aborted?) Silverstone plan for a banked corner. Sorry about the random nature of the source...

id prefer to see designers getting a bity more creative, more negative camber corners would be good, like Coram at Snetterton.

This is a great topic. I have alway been impressed by banked corners on road tracks. Two of the best corners to pass on in F1 today are just after banked corners in Brazil and Indy(roval).

Yes! The odd strange camber (or full on banked coner) would add to the difficulty levels in F1. Not an oval, but just extra variety. I'm for it.

The actual oval banked corner at Rockingham is fun, especially when you go round the outside

Different cambers do really get you thinking about the corners. Smokey is right Coram in difficult because of the camber...

And I how to sample the cambers of the Nurburgring later this year...

I don't think banked corners are a good idea f1.
It'll take way from braking zones and limit passing.

Sorry speedbump, but that is complete and total hash.

How exactly will it "take away from braking zones" that statement is nonsensical, as for "limiting passing", well the opposite would be true, as with banked corners the actual grip of the cars increases, passing would actually become easier.
I think that turn the second turn (Estoril) at Magny Cours should be banked as it would allow cars to follow easier through the fast right hander.

Yes banked corners the actual grip of the cars increases, but I'm not sure passing would actually become easier.
Going into a corner there is one real fast entry and exit point.
Your not breaking as hard and can go into a corner faster.
Your creating a faster corner making it harder to pass.

All though you might get more excitement at corners with someone trying to go on the high side.

No speedbump.

The whole point would be to have a medium speed corner followed by a series of flat out straights and banked turns followed by a hairpin or tight corner.

That one section of the US GP track is the perfect example of this.

You wouldn't pass into the banked corner, but the corner is there to allow the cars to follow each other so they can pass at the next corner(s).
We have seen that cars can follow one another quite easily through the final turns at Indianapolis, we need more of this, but with banked tighter corners too like the Dunlop hairpin at Nurburgring.

My bad.
I was picturing these high banked slow and hair pin corners.

There were plenty of banked corners in the past. Monza, Avus for other examples not mentioned.

It would be nice, but I'm not sure its in the plans. New courses are so often so clinical and frankly boring. Isn't it one chap who pens most of them? Blech!

Real drivers like off-camber corners.

Banking is for sissies.

Don K has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Does this mean that a banked corner is just an expensive way of emulating a long straight?

Or is it a clever way of allowing spectators to have a better view of an (emulated) long straight?

unfortunately, FIA rules stop off-camber altogether...
Think of it this way, passing happens in one of four ways:
pitstops
another driver spins off
slipstreaming
out-braking

Most of the passing these days is slipstreaming. Usually the move is completed well before the braking zone for the inevitable hairpin. ALl that's left to do then is for the other guy to give way at the next corner (which if there is a braking zone for at all, the other driver wil have to give way. The only true outbraking moves i saw at all last year in F1 were Ralf Schumacher's moves at the Hungaroring, and the passing that went on at Vale during the BGP.

Yes I think thats exactly right, I do think that the banked turns at Indy do emulate a long straight (except in the wet).

I've always thought camber WAS Banking...

Of a sort...

Barcelona is the only track on F1 right now that has any speed carrying potential of a "real", old-skool-racing sort of corner.

As mentioned before, Estoril, and Indianapolis to a point have exactly what I like to see in the last part of a lap.

Anyone remember Villeneuve taking Michael on the outside in Portugal? And then, the great Murray losing it once again, it was Mansell taking Berger in 1990, on worn tyres, ON THE OUTSIDE of the Peraltada. That was a real "HOLY-S***" moment I'm always gonna remember..

IMHO of course.
