Well in the last week my life changed slightly...basically I'll be opening a motorsport consultancy company in the next few months!
After presenting my idea at a company creation competition, I've been contacted by a few investors and by 2 financial institutes! Basically my idea seems to be of much interest....since there are plans to have a composite division and possibly a wind tunnel in the distante future, it seems that the idea is of much interest! |

I forgot to mention that besides consultancy I'll also have a 3D scanner and a rapid prototyping machine! A composite section is still being thought! I'll also have a motorsport marketing and management department... |

AU N EGL....you're right...but when I said I won't have a boss I mean that I don't have do have fixed working hours and a lot of things I can do at home...I can work more or less whenever I want! And at the same time depending on the amount of costumers I have I can decide if I want to accept or reject new costumers. I know I'll have to work my butt off at the begining (3 or 4 years)...It's going to be a whole lot of work... |

Glad i found this forum, been great to read through. I also have a dream to get into top end motorsport doing race engineering, but i realise you need to start low and work your way up doing a whole variety of things and gaining as much experience and knowledge as possible.
Currently 3rd year mechanical engineering degree here in Australia and involved in the Formula SAE program at the uni which has been brilliant. Have a few contacts who have done everything from WRC, F1, V8 supercars and A1GP who have been fantastic with advice. anyway i guess its just keep your head down and work towards your goals, you will get there if your determined enough . |

I have applied for a BSc course at University. Is it really true these are pretty much useless?

No I think a BSc in Aeronautics or similar is very valid. What course are you going for and where?

Herts is a good Uni to go to since their Formula Student team is pretty successful at the moment. I'm about to Graduate from Birmingham with an MEng in Automotive engineering and have been heavily involved in Formula Student since my first year and I can guarantee that these days, one way of massively increasing your chances of getting into Motorsport is to get involved in FS.
A number of our ex team members have got into F1. One of them who left about 5 years ago went and worked for Minardi for all of about 3 weeks (they couldn't afford to pay him any longer!) and then moved to Reynard. He left them about 1 week before they went bust (very lucky) to go to Jordan and then left them not long before they were sold off to work for RedBull were he is now acting as a data engineer at the races. Needless to say though it's been a long journey for him to get to where he is now. I know of two other in recent years who now work at Mercedes HPE. One is a CAD monkey and the other is now a test engineer. The hours are long and the pay isn't any better than most other areas of industry. Unfortunately, a lot of jobs in F1 aren't as glamorous as they might seem at first since they work you hard for not much reward. They play on the fact people are disparate to get into it! I personally, would recommend doing a good automotive degree at Birmingham, Herts, Brookes, L'Borough etc and then going into production automotive design for a relatively small company like Jag (their engineering depts are quite small). You can get the experience you need here and then perhaps after a few years move over into motorsport at a higher level. The biggest problem with any race team is lack of time. It takes a lot of time and money to train even an engineering graduate up to a level where they can be left on their own and more often than not, when you do get trained up, all you'll be doing is designing one small part of the car. Come in with experience however and they will take you a lot more seriously. From a personal point of view as well, when you've been at Uni for 4 years, you want to get yourself settled down a bit and pay off some debt. I'm lucky since I entered before they bumped up the tuition fees, but potentially now you'll have over £20,000 of loans to pay back when you've finished. By all means work hard to get into F1, but just take your time a little and plan your career path and gain experience elsewhere so you can get into F1 as perhaps a race engineer. Also add Delft university to your list of places to consider. They have a very successful Formula Student team and they have a good level of knowledge and understanding of their car.
There is no right or wrong way to get into motorsport. I suspect pretty much everyone in the industry has a different background. However you'll find that most, like you, started off working with a team, polishing cars, sweeping the floor and making the tea. If you show you are prepared to start at the bottom, and make a significant contribution to the team they will begin to trust you more. Good luck with your journey, grab any opportunity that comes your way and who knows what might be possible. |

My opinion on Herts - its ok, I've not visited so can't really comment further - despite living 15 mins away I've never been invited.
But the questions are largely answered in previous posts |
