Archer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Whats with F1 car numbers?

Quick question,

I just noticed that a lot of teams over the years sometimes choose not to display their car numbers...

Minardi the past couple of years, Sauber a few times, Jordan a few times to...

Why is this and why does the FIA allow it?

I'm not sure, but I believe that there has to be a car number at lest on the nose.
On the other hand, if it's high towards cockpit, there is no way you can see it, except from a helicopter cam - when it's zoomed in.

There is a number on every car (somewhere) but with sponsorship space both extremely limited & valuable, numbers are put in the "wherever we cn fit them" spot.

I would love to go back to the old days when drivers had their own numbers, and kept them.

Minardi has it on the nose, while Jordan has it on the wing.

Yes, it was there, under the nose. I saw it in the camera on the side of the nose of Fisicos car.

I'd love for them to go back to when you could see the numbers on the cars but unfortunately it seems like they don't deem the numbers important.

I think that you'll find that all F1 cars have the numbers on both side plates of the rear wing assembly, although the numbers still are not exactly what you could call big But they are there.

Most people recognise who is driving them from colours of cars & crash helmets but for marshals / corner workers, it makes life difficult as we have to give car numbers when reporting incidents etc.

And if you think you have trouble making the numbers out on TV, we have just as much trouble on the bank!

Hope this helps.

Scott Ball,
Incident Marshal.

The simple fact is the teams don't get paid for putting numbers on, and space on a car = money
