Didn't know Renault employed the engineers behind the Mach 5.

Ever since Russia got rid of communism, captalist companies tried to make a Russian version of the Dukes of Hazzard staring Mr Petrov. Their test footage is what we saw in F1.

There seem to be one or two misinterpretations of the steering column issue (IMHO!). As I saw it, it wasn't either the rack or the steering column that broke, it was the column mounting to the monocoque. The steering continued to function, although the precision was somewhat reduced.

It would appear that the inertia of the steering wheel and column was sufficient to break the bracket when the car hit the ground on landing. I suppose this reflects the car floor hitting the road and then the huge stiffness of the monocoque means that the decel and therefore force at the bracket was massively more than you might otherwise expect. A bit worrying though: in slightly different circumstances he could have found himself in considerably greater need of steering than actually turned out to be the case.

Unless I missed something, the steering wheel could be pulled towards Mr Petrov after the landing, suggesting that the linkage in the column also broke..

There are links in the column (it's not a single straight rod to the rack), the bracket at the top going would mean that those links had more freedom, and even if still attached to the rack would allow some forward and back movement along with the left right up down wobble.

I bet he's sore. There's been no talk of more severe injury, which is a surprise. Imagine jumping from even a small height and landing on your arse. I remember a GP2 driver doing similar at Monaco (Christian Bakkerud?) and fusing a few vertebrae together.

Remember he is in a very snug custom made foam lined seat - its not like landing on your bum on concrete (ever tried to learn to inline skate without padding? That hurts). And you also have the car suspension to take some of the load.

That said, it's still going to be uncomfortable! There was a locost race a few years back at Lydden where the front of a car was launched up to 45degress then splatted back down. Driver was OK, but had back pain, and he only came down from a couple or three of feet.

correct, though iirc whether a driver is injured or not depends on how the car lands. if you look at petrovs car, the vast majority of the initial landing was absorbed by one of the rear wheels. i think in bakkerud's case, the landing was straight onto the chassis, and it simply transmitted the entire force of landing through to his back.

Petrov always does something memorable. Today he stopped on the track. Okay not his fault I know(his car lost its gears). Rubens however, was miffed at it, he wants to give Petrov a penalty. I only hope Petrov does something exciting in the race.
