Elva Mk 3, 4 and 5
Looking at the threads, there seems to me to be a rather large hole in the Elva chassis archive. Maybe I'm just sensitive as I own a Mk4, but it would be nice to know where these cars are, and what condition they're in.
So, to start the thread, here's the details of my car: Elva Mk 4 Chassis No 100/67 Works car in '59 (Continental Motors), won class at Sebring 12 hours driven by Baptista/Tweedale/Wallace. Continued to be raced by Frank Baptista in '59. Sold late'59 to Ed Costly. Raced Sebring again in '60, finished 2nd in class. '61, sold to Dutch Orstand. Cov Climax engine swapped for Ford 1500cc (still fitted) Mid 60's: Ferrari 750 Monza engine fitted (I kid you not ![]() 1970 Bought by Greg Miller, of FAF Ferrari in Atlanta, for the MOnza engine, and left outside in a woodpile! Bought by Ralph Whaley in 1980, to restore. Sadly he never quite got around to starting the project. Bought by Mike Cammarata in 1986, and restoration started, albeit slowly. During the restoration Ed Costly came to view the car. Bought by me in '03, and raced infrequently in Gentlemen Drivers, Cloth Cap... etc |

He gave me the following information: I am the owner of this car from 2005, I bought the car from Harold Pace on ebay. I restored the car, I put in an Alfa Romeo SV engine of the 1958 (the first serie) because I found on the literature that the L-type chassis were predisposed for this particular engine. Indeed I found in the car an AlfaRomeo gearshift. I restored the car body in english green I found in the car originally. I will add some of the photos Alessandro sent me asap. |

Elva MK III 100/54 found
Elva MK III Chassis 100/54 is is San Diego, CA> It was purchased by current owner in court auction in mid-1990’s from Gary Clark.
The car was raced by Tom Greatorex, who was Shelby's mechanic at Venice, CA, and who helped to build the Cobra Coupe. The car is for sale. Contact bobengberg@aim.com if interested. |

In addition to the self-coloured, aluminium bodied, 1172 Ford and later Climax-powered Mk1 or Mk 2 raced by Colin McNaughton in Kenya that I described on the Mk1/Mk2 thread there was a second Elva in Kenya in the fifties. This was a fibreglass-bodied Mk3 or Mk 4. This had an 1100 Climax, was initially dark blue (self colour of the GRP) and was later resprayed in BRG. The body did not have a driver's headrest. I'm not sure of the owner but the name J W Hickman comes to mind, but after fifty years my memory may be at fault here.

The car had no chassis plate when it was discovered, but it was certainly Ed Costley's car which he took to 2nd in class, and 37th overall in the '61 Sebring 12 hours. He viewed the car during restoration, and wrote a letter detailing the modifications he made to the body for the 12 hour race. I also have a video taken from his home-movie of the event which stars my car, and the bottom of every pretty woman he saw through the lens ![]() Ed says he bought it direct from Continental Motors in '59, and that it was a works car in that year, having run at Sebring. He also said that there were 2 for sale at the time, a blue one and a green one. He took the green one, which was in maintained better, and in better condition. Ed seemed to think that it was therefore the Frank Baptista car that took the class win at Sebring in '59, but that's not 100% sure. Frank's son and widow were guests of honour at it's first race after restoration, at Atlanta. Unfortunately, during restoration,Mike Cammarata (the fine Georgia gentlemean that restored the car to it's former beauty) was advised by the experts of the time (mid-late '80s) that the car was chassis no 100/67, though it now seems that 100/67 may not have been a mk4 at all. The car is in fact certainly in truth either 100/71, /72, or /73. But which one? I'd be grateful of any help in this matter! One day I'll put a Cov Climax back in it, repaint it in Continental Motors colours, and sort the chassis number out. Or maybe not. ![]() |
