VP MS 109 Racing fuel

Hello everyone. I have a question about some racing fuel I just purchased. I have just built a 72 Group 2 Capri with an iron head 2.9 V6 and dry sump. I started out running C10 fuel cut with pump gas and had to switch over too MS 109Vp fuel cut 50% with pump gas. I have now noticed a lot of fuming coming out of the dry sump tank vent which smells like MS 109.
There doesn't appear to be any fuel in the oil that I can see or feel. Maybe the dry sump is pulling some combustion gases thru the rings. I'm not sure what kind of vacuum I am running but I know it was not fuming with the C10 in it. Didn't know if any one had any thoughts. Thanks

Are you sure about the piston rings position (I know, not really easy to check now!)? I dont think the change of gas can make this kind of thing but with more energy you could have to check and adjust your AFR if necessary. What kind of oil are you using (brand and viscosity)? I had this smell in a heavily tuned bike engine (air/oil cooled Suz'), changing the oil brand cured the trouble. But no smoke through the breather.

Racing fuel

Thanks Gerard I am using a high zinc break in oil 15-40 from Joe Gibbs. About 12 qrts worth for the whole system. Maybe its the Fuel. This MS109 has a very pungent smell to it but a little concerning since I don't know if the vapor is flammable. It sure smells like it.

Dont jeopardize with fluids contained in any reservoir of any car. Even brake fluid is flammable (learnt that on the hard way, caliper leak during endurance racing). Many de-rust products are too. I guess your car is a Weslake replica (siamese or non heads?), did you purchase the parts somewhere in England? If I may ask, what kind of induction did you go for (Kugel or modified KJetronic or big carbs?).

Yes the front suspension is Ric Wood as is the 3 weber intake{42 DCNFs} and T5 bell housing. The diff is Gartrac.{coil overs,Watts and 4 link} The engine is a 2.9 V6 Ford Ranger motor. 3 Port exhaust.{Piper full road race cam Shell lifters 11:1 CR. Wheels are from Image. So yes alot of parts from England. I wanted to come as close as I could to the original and stay within my budget which was healthy an original engine would have doubled the build.

Motor is from a 1990 Ford ranger. 2.9 3 port. {Couldn't afford a real Weslake engine} Piper full race cam, Shell lifters.11:1 CR. Tires are Avon. 10 inch on frt and 12 inch on rear. Posted some pics.

Thanks for the pics, nice color scheme. Do you use a Be Cool rad, they have a good reputation here (Moslers like them!). Ric's catalogue can turn you crazy. He makes repros from the works hubs (spline wheels) which are wonders. He makes a slight modification of the rear suspension which cures some troubles experimented in period…
Do you expect around 340 hp (DIN rather than SAE…). In some of your series do you have to apply for an HTP? Are there many Capris in your area?

No Gerard I won't be getting anywhere near that horsepower. I'm hoping for 250. Iron heads. I know the Weslake motors were better than 320 but that was nowhere near the budget plus I can build 5 of these for what it cost to do a Weslake engine. No there aren't alot of Capris over here. Two Group 2 Capris that I know of. I will be racing with Vintage Race Group next year and will be put in the Trans Am group.

Thanks for those infos. I know Ric starts his Westlake engines from a 2.9 basis sometimes but where he gets the stuff from I dunno. As you can guess, there are several Capri fans in the area. 250 is a figure Ric achieves everyday building Grp 1,5 engines, cast iron block and heads, 48 IDA carb. So, prepare yourself to a surprise when at dyno, a good one. Machined heads won't give you much power but will allow your engine to run cooler. Keep it cool, really cool…

Assuming you started with a donor car being a Mercury Capri, front end gril must be a challenge to be found. Same for the LHD rack and pinion

Actually Gerard I am across the pond in Richmond Vermont USA. Found a rust free 71 in Arizona and started with that. Made all the brackets for the 4 link,Watts and compression struts. It was fun but going on seven years now.
The grille I had to make some bars and weld them in to cover up the frt directional holes. Do you race Gerard?

Gosh! Arizona is about 4 times the total length of France from you! A rust free Capri is a dream here, those who dont have to bother with the driver side import cars from Australia. With no guarantee of course (ask Ric!). Very few companies product good quality metal panels, it seems easier to refurbish an Escort. The bracket location on the chassis is important. You are building a wonderful car prepare yourself to love it if its your first Capri. Yes I race sometimes.

Its my first race Capri but not my first Capri. Have a 73 Capri 2.6 that had a turbo added to it in 75 . Fun car to drive. Also have a Ferguson 4wd Capri that was brought over here to be sold to the general public. Only 17 made including the rally cars which this is not that needs everything and a 73 2.6 daily driver. Love those Capri's. I think Expressed panels over your way is making a bunch of panels now for the MK 1 Capri.

Lucky you a Ferguson is a myth for any Capri fan! How is it to drive? When young I use to borrow a MKI 2.6 and loved to while a little bit tricky on the wet… Not worse than my 2002 TI in this case! The supplier you mention may seem not cheap to some but the parts I saw are really good quality, meeting or exceeding original parts' metal thickness. They even stock some NOS for other models (MK II and III).
I guess its easier for you to race in Canada rather than FL or CA may be?

I only have driven it once when I got it Gerard. It has spent the first 10 years of its life being driven in the winter with lots of salt on the road. Its on my restoration list. Good to talk with you.

Yes really I enjoy this talk its so good to learn what is done around the world. Different people same car same passion. There is an Australian on the forum who posts fantastic pictures of racing. I couldn't imagine so many Simcas (french cars brand now disappeared) in Australia!
When you put it on the road or on the track please post some pics if it doesn't break any rule of the forum! Be prepared to read around 270 horses not poneys!
