Peugeot is back !

Live from Le Mans scrutineering : it seems that in 2007, Peugeot will enroll the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a diesel car.
Officially said today at 2:00pm.
Quite brave, but no picnic IMO...

This is tremendous! It just keeps getting better and better. I wonder if Pescarolo Sport will have a shot at being the factory team?

Brilliant news. The next few years are really looking up for sportscar racing. We could have factory teams from Audi, Porsche and Peugeot battling for the win at Le Mans in 2007.

Mazda North America are backing the BK Courage C65 running in the ALMS, so maybe they'll take in Le Mans in future years and face up to Porsche in LMP2.

absolutely fantastic stuff! whats even better is that they will contest the full LMES schedule as well as LM... it will be great to have someone take it to Audi, esp. with a Diesel engine! (suggestions are that Audi will only use an evolution of their current TT V8 and not a Diesel initially for their new prototype)

Mazda will not make any further steps until the ACO relaxes their restrictor rules for rotory engines, because as of now a rotory is just a dog due to the regs...

Agree about the LMES.

There have been many Le Mans only programs since the end of Group C.

Sportscar racing however has only reached a truly mainstream audience when we have seen a strong Championship/Series, with manufactuers competing, and building up the fan base on their travels around the world.

Now thats Porsche, Peugeot, Audi...wheres Jaguar?

More precisions on Jérôme Mugnier's Virages : the car will be ingeneered by Peugeot Sport, and should shakedown at the end of 2006.

News on Le Monde too. It is said there that Peugeot is attracted by the Le Mans attendance (including by TV).

Random, improbable and completely false news update... having discovered something major in car design called a "curve", Lada are following Peugeot and are considering a turn at Le Mans! It's hoped that by 2009 they can be the official car of the Catering staff with less than 5 breakdowns per car promised

...sorry I'll shut up now, lol

It'd good to hear that Peugeot are coming back, though - more manufacturers the better, and Diesel is bound to work when a big manufacturer like themselves get involved.

Let's hope their diesel is quicker than the Sodemo-tuned engines Henri competed with a couple of years ago..

Great to see another manufacturer throwing their hat into the ring - is this model going to be the 906?

Just wondering, if we have Audi with the R9 and maybe an LMP1 Porsche by 2007, plus new kit like the R&S LM-GTP, how will a diesel fair?

I could see it having done well if they were the sole manufacturer team (i.e no Audi, etc) but surely if they have to compete against (presumably) petrol machine from the other works teams, isn't their major competitive advantage (longer stints due to the efficiency of diesel) going to be erroded by the reliability that Audi seem to almost guarantee now? I mean, when Bentley won in 2003, weren't they down to like, half an hour in the pits for the whole race? I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that a diesel is going to be down on power/top end compared to a petrol car, so that seems a big ask to stretch the stints sufficiently far to overcome any disadvantages of a diesel engine (lower top end, heavier engine)?

Excellent news that Peugeot is coming back, I guess we know where Sebastien Loeb will be in 2007 then?

I'm still half expecting Audi to turn up next year with both a petrol and a diesel car(R9 and R9D?)

Who knows, maybe Toyota will enter a Lexus hybrid?

It will be an HDI V10 with particles filter (Sodemo one was a 6 cylinders, wasn't it ?).

While looking for some background information on race diesel engines, I found some interesting articles:
* TDI vs. T-FSI: a comparison of possible powerplants for Le Mans (not so technical correct, I think, aspecially the claim that a diesel could produce more horsepower under the current LMP1 engine regulation)
* 2 (very interesting) articles by Perkins Engine Company on the Taurus diesel car: 24 Heures du Mans, 2004 and Silverstone 1000km LMES race - August 2004
* Racecar Engineering article

Jean-Pierre Nicolas (Peugeot Sport) in Ouest France today : "the engine will be a 650 HP one, but we don't know if it will be a V8 or a V10" - "It will be a brand new prototype, open or roofed, nothing to do with the recent GT".

The 907 was a nice looking GT car, but it makes sense they are after the overall victory, and that needs a sports prototype.
