Second time recently he's mentioned marshals.
Maybe he's coming to join us!! Also Lewis said it was good to see all the marshals flags waving on his slowdown lap. So I guess we do exist then!! |

The public were great at Copse - none of them knew which car Lewis was in, they only reacted at the very end, when it was all over & they could hear the commentary. Every time he did his practice starts in the Pit Exit - no reaction, unlike the Spaniards for Alonso and the Finns for Kimi who went apape everytime their man did it.

Silverstone are laughing as a lot of people who dont care/know much about F1 have got tickets for the race weekend. If they were real fans though they would know who lewis was when he left the pits etc, not exactly hard 2 spot is he!! |

Isn't that better than having them not watch at all? At least there's a vague chance they might learn a little something.....? |

I would have said so myself yes... How does anyone get interested in any form of sport ?? They hear about it in the media and decide to pop along a take a look for themselves and hey presto some of them might like it... Some of them may even think they want to be marshals... |

Then we have a load of converted, new fans for motorsport in the uk and if thay want to get invoved thay can talk to us at the track ( or listen to martin and co giving us a plug on tv) I,m sure if you take someone to local, grass roots racing event like; 750mc, we could see a new bunch of people taking an interest in motorsport At least in motorsport the brits have a chance off winning major championships........F1- lewis hamilton, WSBK-james toseland, INDY 500- dario franchitti, CHAMPCARS- justin wilson and co........to name but a few All starting at grass roots level british motorsports. |

it's unlikely folks will join the ever ageing marshals, more likely to get freebie tickets or force their kids into the sport.............Most UK adults dont even know where race circuits are or that any publications exist........thats reality......the Lewis effect and wanting to show off to their friends that they saw him at Silverstone..........

We can't afford to be snobbish about this. Increased interest in our sport can only be a good thing, regardless of the reason behind it. Of those people who turn up / tune in on the back of Hamilton's success, some of them might actually find they enjoy it & (shock horror) investigate other forms of the sport. I know I did.

When Martin did his grid walk he started by talking to one of the marshals and gave us a good plug too. Well done that man.

The Great British public showed themselves up in their usual way today.
In other words they didn't have a clue what car Lewis was in. M<assa was cheered in all the right places & the many, many poles knew which car Kubica was in, but whenever Lewis went by - nothing! mind you the amount of shiny new shirts & hats for car 2 meant someone was on a nice earner. Hey Ho. Back to 'proper racing' again next week |

Sorry guys, it's not your sterling service, enormous grit and surpassing professionalism that leads Mr.Brundle to talk to you.
When Martin first started commentating with the sainted Murray, after James Hunt made the first step towards being actually sainted, he would stroll down the pit lane and chat with his mates, racing drivers who were still racing. Then, as time passed, he would talk to the drivers who he manages. Maybe the teams have clamped down on that, 'coz who did he talk to at Silverstone? Mrs.Beckham, 'Girls Aloud', a jockey and the Duke of Kent. OK, the Dook is the "President-in-Chief" of the BRDC but I don't think he's driven competitively for a very long time, if ever. And Martin was running up and down the grass verge of the grid, looking for someone to schmooze before he found those. Well done, indeed, Martin, when there are so many 'celebrities' given grid passes but whose presence adds not a thing to the event, to talk for five seconds to a representative of the marshals without whom nothing would happen. Lets hope you'll follow this up with more 'grid-side' walks. John (an appreciative racer, and occasional marshal - enough to know what it means) |

I didn't see the coverage but it's worth remembering that Martin has spent quite a bit of time at UK circuits over the last year or so as his lad Alex has been in Tcars and FPA, I'd imagine he is very aware of the work done by Marshals at those meetings week in and week out.
(and yes it's got to be said Alex has visited quite a few marshals' posts in that time so no wonder Martin is appreciative!) |
