Global Rallycross Championship 2013

I can't see a thread already up for this and, given that some websites are already trickling information out on the schedule for 2013...

http://usracereport.com/2012/11/14/g...races-in-2013/
(thanks to ERC24.com for posting the link on Facebook)

...I thought I would start one! According to the "insider", there will be 9 rounds in 2013, with four known rounds thus far:

18/04/2013 - 21/04/2013 - Foz de Iguaçu, Brazil
09/05/2013 - 12/05/2013 - Barcelona, Spain
27/05/2013 - 30/05/2013 - Munich, Germany on May 27-30
01/08/2013 - 04/08/2013 - Los Angeles, California

These would obviously coincide with the "Global" X-Games events in those countries.

If GRX is to run at Aspen, mid November seems very late to announce it.

GRC in Winter X Games was no question – so far...
Although it would be nice to have something like the Andros Trophy...

Not according to the driver I talked to this week. He said it's Brazil, Spain, Germany, Los Angeles. That was my "insider," if you will.

Continuing with the "inside" information, the investment group leader is a man named Colin Dyne. http://usracereport.com/2012/11/16/g...ader-revealed/ Dyne is the CEO of William Rast (sponsored Dan Wheldon in the 2011 Indy 500) and his son Austin is a race driver, so he knows his way around motorsports.

My speculation is that if they did Aspen there would be too large of a gap between rounds in the season, and after 2012, they don't want that. Am currently working on a full projected schedule and silly season chart to be posted intermittently with our 2012 season reviews.

Been looking at the potential/rumored race dates for 2013. The most likely ones all seem to be clear of clashes with the ERC. Very possible for Foust, Doran, etc. to contend for both championships next year were they to have the funding.

Anyone want a 2011 GRC Hyundai Veloster?...

https://rhys-millen-racing.myshopify.../cars-for-sale

...any idea as to what the plans are for RMR in 2013? I assume they are looking for another manufacturer?

Perhaps they needed all-new chassis and drivetrain rather than yet more rebuilds.

From what I gather RMR is looking for another manufacturer since Hyundai chose to end that deal. Am wondering if they may be one of the teams building a privateer vehicle—we've heard rumors of Chevys, Hondas, Scions, and a Mini. I have no confirmation of this but I'm guessing RMR might want the Volkswagen deal, or if Ford shifts its WRC money, that deal. Don't expect Rhys to field two cars again though without manufacturer support.

Also, for those who haven't seen it: http://www.racer.com/insight-global-...rticle/270540/

The schedule that Brian Gale is suggesting could be very interesting, especially if they put on a beach race in Florida. (Maybe alongside the rumored St. Petersburg race in the neighboring town of St. Pete Beach.) Street races from July on for IndyCar include Baltimore and the doubleheader at Houston.

Certainly a more eclectic mix of tracks in 2013. I thought the SEMA layout was a lot more interesting, so it should be good if this is the sort of layouts they are looking at next year.

Yes, Hyundai is out of all US-based motorsport as of January 1. They announced that back in September:
http://usracereport.com/2012/09/26/b...-after-season/
https://rhys-millen-racing.myshopify...s-with-hyundai

The announcement coincided with the brand unveiling a new WRC-spec car.

Global strategy... I wonder what that might mean for the United States: Nascar, endurance, or just sponsoring stick and ball sports and reality shows.

Unless a US round is on the cards and not before time, they've got some great stages there. I get the impression that rallying has a reasonable following in the states and could get big there.

We do have some great stages in the US but there is no way any US event could host, afford, have the logistics to host a round of the WRC.

Also, and not to thread jack, the following is not huge when you consider the population. There is talk of Canada hosting an event somewhere in Quebec but once again financially it would be really hard plus no local entrants (no WRC cars here) plus Rally America isn't FIA affiliated.

So back to the thread, that is why GRC works in the US.

Plus X Games/ESPN offer the only real mainstream rally exposure in the US. I don't think the WRC would ever have considered that as a legitimate option, even when it was still primarily running the Special Stage format. It would've been nothing more than a glorified all-star race, wouldn't have counted for points I'm sure, wouldn't have been worth it to any of the parties involved.

Anyways, back to the Hyundai thing: as I understand it the brand is done with North America for the moment. They were successful here with RMR, they accomplished all their goals, they've got brand awareness up, now they want to focus on raising it elsewhere. I could be wrong but at the very least I doubt you'll see them in anything (or anything similar to) RMR competed in.
