Galles are a decent team, Unser won a race with them last year. I think the G-Force and Dallara are pretty closely matched as far as chassis go.

Well, that was not a race for the ages.

Gil was 'sandwiched' by two IRLers when he was just in the lead of the race and heading for the pits (the commentator I heard said the guy in front was not paying attention!) and Helio has blown up.

When I turned it off, about six other people had either blown up or caught fire (Sarah Fisher was on fire).

So there you go.

I think I also noticed that Little Al was lapped twice.

Phoenix once upon a time was a really good Cart race- for a 1 mile bull ring it's incredibly fast, it was probably the first short oval with a lap record under the 20 second mark (and iirc, it was Our Paul who first broke it). It used to put on some great racing...much better than some of the dud ovals that Champ Cars race on these days..

I didn't watch it very closely, but it was funny to hear all those names I thought were gone forever.

Apparently it is now being said that Gil turned in too late on his way to the pits and he was the one who caused the 3 car pileup. If anyone can find a press release or write up about this race, would you post the URL?

He ran into the back of deFerran when Gil was clearly on the apron of the track attempting entering the pit. He then tried to blame deFerran for the accident. You have to be awake to drive a racecar, Jeret!

Not including the Cart drivers, I honestly have not heard of anymore than 5 of those racers.

I tried the Pheonix circuit in Indycar 2. It is actually the most fun of the mile ovals. However, I found it very tight, and rather hard to pass, except at the first corner under braking. Still, more fun than any short oval on the current Cart track. You come so close to those walls, at such high speeds. It is as if you are about to have 3 big crashes every lap, and you just barely get by every time. Excellent!

Phoenix is an excellent track, and when in was a CART event prior to 1996, the grandstands were always full. Now there are more empty seats than full. One of the best CART races ever was held at Phoenix in 1993. Nigel Mansell and Paul Tracy traded the lead several times at high speed in heavy traffic. Mansell won and Tracy ended up in the wall. Now aerodynamic restrictions on the short ovals ( The Hanford MkII) make that type of racing nearly impossible.

Hmmm....I don't think Nige won in 1993. In practice he stuffed it in well and truely, and was KOed in the accident. So Mario was the only starter for Newman Hass. Paul was flying, and I think he lapped the field. However he tried a move on a backmarker, didn't make it, and promptly stuffed it in.

If you dont know who the drivers are ..watch the races and find out who they are

out of the whole field there was only one driver I have never heard of ..Brandon something ????

as for the de ferran crash...hmmmm..line ball on that one...de ferran was clearly NOT on the apron and jeret was not paying attention as much as he should..it was just an unfortunate accident.

it wasnt a bad race and Sam Hornish drove to perfection and deserved his first ever IRL victory and buddy lazier also performed well despite being stuck in first gear.

was interested to see Jason Priestly commentating and he did a reasonably good job

looks like being a very good year for the IRL and I am waiting for Indy with baited breathe.

OOps, I stand corrected. Nigel did sit out Phoenix in 1993 and Mario won the event. I can't imagine how I forgot that. I think I was confusing two different races, Phoenix and maybe New Hampshire or something. There's been a lot of racing since then.

But unless the Penske boys are racing, I don't think I'll watch any more IRL races. I really don't even like oval racing in Champ Cars.

I don't watch or follow IRL, quite simply because it's not shown on a channel that I can receive. If it was, I think I would watch it.

You have to wonder about "Widdle" Al though, I would think it's rather humiliating for someone with his name and previous record to be performing this badly in such company, as we know the CART drivers are better than this lot.

If you dont know the players, just pick one and follow him/her for a few races. I pick Robbie Buhl. He is a fellow Michaganian, and a 10/10's member.

since when did this happen ..or are ya just pulling my leg?

anyway I have followed the IRL since 1997 and have found it a great series..sure the technology isnt up with the best (allthough they cars are quite technical) and the drivers are not household names but they are still very good drivers..mainly I like the shape of the cars ..thats what attracted me to it at first and now i think it is a good series and treat it with the same respect I show all other classes of racing.
