STCC: A Merdedes on the grid 2005

There will be a Mercedes on the grid for the 2005 STCC season. Tobias Johansson is the man who will be behind the wheel of a C-Class Mercedes. Tobias who drove for KMS Audi last year never got a renewed contract and will for the next season move on to this project which Roland Gingtorp is running. Gingtorp has previously built other Mercedes that has been driven in other Swedish series like the GTR Mercedes CLK that Tony Johansson drove.

That would be so cool to see a MB in the ETCC. There has always been rumors of a ST MB showing up during the ST years. I wonder how likely and and serious is this lastest rumor about a MB built to S2000 rules? For some reason, privateers have never built a MB?

I think MB themselve will not built a S2000 car and will not support privateers in building such car.

From what I hear, it seems there is a lot of interest from teams wanting to run MBs. However, bc MB doesn't support privateer efforts, no privateer team has built one. Or more accurately, no team has the financial resources to really put build a high quality one. If they're built, they struggle with reliability. Of course, I'm not blaming the efforts of the independent teams, but MB for being so unsupportive of their efforts!

Mercedes decided, that the DTM is their "playground". BMW isn´t showing up in the DTM, either Alfa, Ford (including Volvo) have Zakspeed forbidden to build a private DTM- Mondeo or S40 (or S60?) in 2000... thats the game, dudes. Mercedes, that means 100% or nothing. I´m not a MB-Fan, but you have to respect this decision.

Well factory-backing or no factory-backing, I will be looking forward to seeing Tobias Johansson race his privateer Mercedes in the STCC next year (assuming, of course, they get it finished), going up against Volvo, BMW, Audi, Opel, Alfa Romeo, Honda and Peugeot

Is Mercedes Benz looking for a new playground if DTM would go down in flames?

Not really, this is a totally privately funded team which will build and run the MB.

The DTM isn't looking to go down in flames really?

So will Bosch sponsor the C Class when the STCC starts up or are they just renting the car as a display for just a few days? It's good that the paint scheme is an original one and not the usual Mclaren F1 knockoff. Too bad there aren't any bigger pics of the car!

Bosch is the full-time sponsor of the Mercedes team, yeah.

Maybe they could supply one of these Mercs as a privateer effort for the BTCC......

Are you talking about Mercs building customer cars like what BMW is doing? I'm sure if someone paid Tobias a reasonable amount of money, he would build an extra car for them. But that doesn't seem likely in this day and age. People don't have that much to spend. Furthermore, would anyone spend money on an unproven car?

Hey, I love MB and S2000, but that's just reality these days.

The first Mercedes C-Class chassis converted to Super 2000 rules is ready now. Transmission and engine is still in the works and will be ready shortly. "We are counting on getting the first engine in early March and a first shake down will follow shortly after that. If everything is ok then we will go to Brno in early April for the first real test," Tobias said. The number of Mercedes that will be on the grid of the STCC 2005 premiere in May isn´t set yet. Jimmy Jacobsson is working on financial bits and there are negotiations with a third driver for a third C-Class.

So it looks like 3 C Class are being built, but only 2 cars confirmed so far? Will there be enough sponsorship to field even 2 cars fulltime?
