I think Bernie is missing a big opportunity here to spice up the racing. They should use a full canopy then he can enforce a compulsory pit stop to clean it.

The introduction of canopies to F1 could be quite innovative not just in terms of safety.

The question of egress is often brought up but the fully enclosed and sealed safety cell would remove the need to escape quickly. The safety cell isolates the driver from danger, such as fire until the situation is under control. If the car lands upside down the driver waits until it is right way up before getting out.

Canopies would remove the need to have such high cockpit sides and allow the driver to see more. Likewise spectators would be able to see more of the driver rather than just his head wobbling about.

I don't see the evolution in F1 as a problem. Just as it hasn't always been open wheel, or aero reliant, it doesn't have to remain open cockpit.

Canopies would be awesome from a spectacle standpoint as well, watching the drivers get belted in and the canopy coming down over them.

It'd get younger people into the sport just due to the fact the drivers would look more like fighter pilots, and that is cool.

I think it's interesting that the FIA uses just a tyre as an example of debris in these testing videos. where is the hub, with the broken suspension parts and tethers hanging off, just begging to be caught up in a halo

There's definitely a wheel attached to that tire.

Curious that Red Bull haven't released (that I've found) any news on their canopy test that was to have taken place last week.
Given they were hoping to run a mockup on Friday, I'd have thought there would have been something by now.

I'm really curious to see what it looks like in action. On paper it looks a lot nicer than the halo.

can't unsee it as a giant helmet visor. wonder if they'd end up swapping them for various tints like drivers do with their visors to suit the conditions...

Probably not, considering they'd still be wearing their helmets which would have the different colored visors on them...just like every other closed top series in the world.

The 'aeroscreen', as RBR call it, has been fitted to Daniel Ricciardo's car but it's not been decided which driver will run it on Friday's debut.

gracious, some people must lead terrible lives if all they can do is come on the internet and be angry about everything.

Hasn't worked for this bloody closed cockpit stuff so far. We've got lots of working systems and we're still sitting here reinventing the wheel.

I tend to like it more than the halo concept. Mostly because I believe it provides better protection and I think that with some refinement it can likely alleviate some of the criticism around it's look. I await to hear what the drivers think of it after testing it.

I have mixed feelings about his comments. While he says he prefers open overall, he also say he would prefer a totally closed cockpit over 1/2 solutions. And he says "an element of danger is key to F1's appeal." I really understand that opinion from from both a drivers and spectators perspective, but I am sure that if he was seriously hurt due to cockpit intrusion he would quickly change his mind. Sort of hard to enjoy all of the money and lifestyle when you are dead or significantly handicapped.

The problem with a closed canopy has got to be driver extraction. If Alonso's car had had a full canopy in Melbourne, he'd have been trapped. Now imagine the car catches fire.

I think the Red Bull screen looks a whole lot better than the halo; and 1950s Grand Prix cars had windshields. But the real question is effectiveness.
