Having owned quite a lot of these over the years (even lately an Ecoboost Fiesta) I always found they are cost effective. But the fuel engines have something in common, they are damn thirsty!

And now the SUV's have to pay skyhigh to park in Paris area (18€ per hour, c 230 per day). Mind you that SUV is not a french acronym it's been a challenge for our authorities to qualify a SUV! They went for the most obvious, the weight, setteled at 1600 kilos. Dry or not? With batteries or not? Anyway, this makes many SW's becoming SUV's! I wonder about the weight of an Arcana, 2008, 3008 or 5008. Or may be only foreign productions are targetted? What a mess, again!

Parking charges by weight?

A classic bait and switch.

Force changes for "safety" and "ecology" reasons that increase the size and weight of vehicles and then claim they are in some braid definition way "antisocial" so everyone needs to pay more compensation to society. Or rather to the useless councils who manage "society" and whose greatest skills are directed towards having well-paid jobs with little real personal responsibility but a lot of "power", early retirement and fat pensions.

Once they have forced the European manufacturers out of the market will they simple allow Chinese vehicles in or are they angling for a rapid extension of public transport of some sort under government control?

Grant, from what I have read and understood about the new higher parking charges for SUVs, most of it is driven by Parisiennes who are fed up with being unable to find parking in Paris because all the available places are chock-a-block with SUVs.

This reminds me about a campaign a couple of years ago being waged by residents around the Swiss Cottage area in North London who were up in arms because roads were being blocked by mothers in their Range Rovers, etc. dropping their cherubs off at school and then returning way too early to pick them up at the end of the school day. The local council, Camden, was considering banning Chelsea tractors from the area, but I don't remember what happened in the end.

Gentlemen, I do enjoy thoroughly your comments. Yes, Mike, Parisiennes or so called. Yes, Grant, by weight. But some have to pay what is called super-malus, related to emissions, fee can be up to 60K € to be paid when the vehicule is first registered. Oops…

The rules make no sense.

A plugin compact (like a León or a 308) weighs more than 1600 kg, so they pay the congestion charge.

The Tesla Model Y weighs less than 2000 kg, so it doesn't pay the congestion charge.
