"Motorsport at the Palace will pay tribute to another famous use of Crystal Palace as in 1969, the venue was used to film scenes in the iconic motoring movie The Italian Job. The circuit’s inner field was used to film the van being blown up so the film’s star Michael Caine could say that immortal line; “You’re only suppose to blow the bloody doors off.” The actual circuit was used by stunt drivers to practice the jumping sequence with the Mini Cooper cars as well as being used for part of the car chase itself"
Crystal Palace the location of the explosion of the post office van in the Italian Job (and starting point of the annual London to Brighton Mini Run). You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off! - YouTube In the above photographs, the remains of the old Crystal Palace motor racing circuit, showing the section used by the Italian Job Mini Coopers to practice jumping. This section of the circuit was also used for the parade lap start of the 25th London to Brighton Mini Run in 2010. |

Amazing work of research and detailed exact locations of scenes from the Italian Job film here:

That website is incorrect with the location of the jumping minis. The sequence was filmed on the Terrace straight and not on the Stadium straight.

MOTORSPORT AT THE PALACE REVS UP
"With just over two weeks to go, Motorsport at the Palace is revving up to be the best yet with around 200 cars battling it out on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th May at Crystal Palace, one of the UK’s oldest race venues." With Classes ranging from pre-war to modern, there’s plenty to keep petrolheads happy. You can see the full line-up of ‘runners and riders’ here. http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co....ors/4590932447 Between the practice sessions in the morning and the racing in the afternoon, we have a very special treat for you. The Italian Job Minis will be taking a lap of the circuit as well as being on display for pictures, after filming scenes from the iconic movie at Crystal Palace some 47 years ago. "There is also a stunning array of motorcycles taking to the tarmac as the Classic Motorcycle Racing Club brings some of the existing lap record holders back to the Palace, some who were involved in the final races back in 1972. Over 40 clubs will display their cars alongside the trader village and family fun fair. There will also be live music from Elle & the Pocket Belles and daredevil stunt action from the Savage Skills bike display team. Private owners can also book pole position parking in the classics area, meeting like-minded owners to showcase a multitude of marques." http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co....ets/4590949256 |

Hope it's great. I enjoyed going there a few times for both cars and bikes before it closed. An interesting setting, it seems a lifetime ago! Oh wait, it was a lifetime ago!

Cracking event again this year and some lovely cars ( and motorbikes) both on course and on display. To marshal this event was, as always, a pleasure.

I went down to have a look yesterday and it looked like a very relaxed Motorsport day, so I think I'll try & get Daniel to enter his Escort next year.

You're on - maybe we can get Mike to enter one aswell?
I came looking for you between the second & third runs & hung around awhile, but you must have been busy elsewhere? Galaxies sounded a little off? |

Sevenoaks & District should get a medal from the MSA for the original idea and for building up Motorsport at the Palace into a great event, but most of all for bringing motorsport onto the doorstep of the millions of people living in South London. It must the best advertisement for motorpsport in the UK.
I had great fun! Got my time down by two seconds to 43.38, still eighth in class, but a win in my head! Thank you S&DMC! John |
