Moffat Jr revs up
Moffat Jr revs up
By Gavin McGrath February 10, 2004 ANOTHER touring car legend's son is set to follow in his father's footsteps. Allan Moffat's son Andrew is the latest second-generation driver to hit the track after Steve Johnson and James Brock. Moffat Jr, 20, who studies music at Melbourne University, will make a modest start in the sports sedan under-two-litre class this year. But he admits he has caught the bug and intends to make racing his career. Andrew said his father had not been an enthusiastic supporter, but was now getting behind his shot at the sport. "Dad's started to realise I'm going to do it anyway, so he's started to help. Sometimes he helps too much," he said. |

I would've thought that there were many more prominent memories from the halcyon days of tin-top racing than merely that of a VK with a broken and dribbly nose. The three young "guns" listed above are the sons of men who between them captured 12 ATCC's & 16 Bathurst 500 mile/1000km enduros, not to mention all the other victories which are beyond my humble ability to remember and recite ad hoc. I wish Andrew all the best, and hope that he is able to absorb some of the lessons his father may be able to relay... after all, he has been the individual who defined what a professional touring car driver was and is in this country, in his dedication and persistence, his value to his sponsors. His contibution to Australian motorsport has been as immesaurable as it has been controversial. (rises from a prostrate position of worship and walks off )

Andrew Moffat ran in last Novembers Island Magic as well - I had a brief talk to him during Sunday - although, I have to admit, I was awestruck because I had gone into the pits to catch up with an old friend of mine, not realising she was assisting Andrew.
The firend? Sue Ransom - walked in to find Pauline Moffat there as well - someone I had not spoken to since the late 1970's! |

It seems young Mr Moffat is stirring up some interest in Supercar land, with links to the famous father not going unnoticed by a few of the more progressive team owners.
Hows about a Faallkeenn in the Supercar series under the Allan Moffat Racing banner? |

He has a way to go yet - Allan is not that keen on Andrew racing - but he is realistic enough to say that if he (Andrew) wants to race - he has to do so without his father doing everything for him.
Andrew and Pauline are happy to do that, Allan is, from reports, happy to stand back but not interfere and not be seen in Andrews pits. IOW - Andrew will stand or fall on his own merits - without the hype of Allan Moffat behind him (which is what happened with Jnr Johnson together with all the expectations...) Personally - I agree with Allan on this and, I believe, so do Pauline and Andrew. |

I think its a great move, but to suggest that there isnt a weight of expectaion because of the name might not be so practical.

Lets not go making two many lists or we will need a whole new website to fit it all on. But I will mention one we forgot - YOULDEN- the 2004 Konica Champion.
