Second qualifying was lovely, dry and warm. Doornbos is just bloody quick. Race 1 result:
1. vd Merwe 2. Green 3. ??? Officials couldn't make up their minds who was third - Piquet or Power - after stopping it early due to crashes and a downpour (everyone on slicks) - and then not restarting with only five of the 11 laps declared. of course they said the reds were shown with six laps completed (Power passed Piquet for third on lap six) but then there's a lap count back. However, the drivers were actually half way around their seventh lap when the red flag was shown and stopped on the grid at the end of lap seven which wasn't because no-one actually crossed the start-finish timing beam. Neither Piquet or Power appeared on the podium. Half points awarded. Before that the race was a cracker. Piquet led at the start. Van der Merwe nobbled him through Les Combes. Then Green got Piquet on the drier outside line into Les Combes. Piquet, forced down the inside damp line, went off and back on again, rejoining just ahead of Power. Green started ganging up on vdMerwe and then Power took Piquet up the Kemmel straight for third. Then it stopped. |

What is the situation now in the championship? How far is van der Merwe off securing the title?

When I'm right he's now 73 points in front, while the maximum is 84 with 4 rounds remaining.

Excellent battle further back with Watts and Piquet. Watts twice fought back past Piquet to finish sixth. Good effort. |

Piquet had a bit of a weird one. Strong in opening stages of race one but struggled for ultimate pace and slipped back. Race two was down to who emerged where in the opening lap spray. Again a very good start but then he stayed pretty much stuck where he was. Didn;t complain, just said lack of experience of Spa in F3 - plus the fact the changing weather meant no-one got much consistent running in either wet or dry conditions - played against him. On saying that, Fortec have never been to Spa before and Dahlgren and Power sucked in the second race. Power was good in the first, however.
Francesca, how about: he used the double header to twice come from behind before but on trying to slip inside him instead cocked up and mounted his rear resulting in a clashing of bodywork and leaving a large trail of rubber and fluid down his bodywork he had no option but to pull off for good. |
