Anybody successful coming from this is going to be an unknown in my opinion.

The known names are already known to not be good enough. The likes of Alice Powell have already had for too many chances. If they were male they would have disappeared years ago.

Yeah and if they get blown away by the men in another series, it’s not exactly do the series any good

i think it's obvious the organisers aren't planning to run the concept for too long. it feels like a single season thing.

british f3 will be looking for new cars at the end of '19.

charlie's a great ambassador for women and lgbt people in motorsport. not a week goes by without her speaking at an event or being featured in the press. not many others in the sport have the kind of visibility that she has, and she's using her platform to speak about a lot of good stuff.

but i'm not sure this is really very relevant to the w series as it stands, though it would have been really interesting to see her take part in the selection process and drown out the segregation nonsense coming from the series with her inclusivity campaign

I'm slightly warming to this idea and I am willing to give it a go. But I still feel conflicted.

Formula E came up with a good idea. Offer teams extra test sessions if they use a female driver. All but two teams have done it.

yeah, i like that too. it's creating opportunities for women, in the same place as the men, and teams don't lose anything through not doing it, they gain extra track time. and to be honest, a lot of the drivers given the test are pretty pr savvy and will be an asset.

meanwhile, a team of pr boffins could only come up with a special series for the little ladies so they don't have to race against big nasty boys. hey ho.

Well the auditions kick off very shortly.

I think the concept of it is great in that it gives them an opportunity to compete on a bigger stage, in front of a larger audience than they would otherwise not have been able to, without a truckload of money. This is all funded, so if you're not good enough from the get-go, you're not getting in.

Going through the list of drivers, there are some very competitive ladies in the group, who run at the pointy end of the field quite often. However, there are quite a number of them who, from what I've been able to find, have virtually zero open wheeler experience of any kind. It will be sink or swim for many, as I don't think there will be any margin of faking it until you make it. This will be a big step up for a number of them.

I'd be keen to see the results at the end of it all, as I feel I can predict that only a small handful of drivers will be true stand-outs, with the just doing enough to make the cut.

very much enjoying these all-girl racing teams that are popping up almost as a counter-measure to this. best of luck to the ladies at daytona.

Well, the list has been whittled down to 28 now, some familiar names have made it through and one or two have fallen at the first hurdle, anyone care to name a potential front runner yet?

honestly, congratulations to the ladies taking the opportunity and running with it and especially glad to see all the brits making it through. no surprise really - they all know what they’re doing. but i struggled to read the press release talking about there being “smiles and tears” when they announced who was going through. cringe. and the ceo describing the women as “tough, brave and strong” as if it was a sanitary product advert or something. cmon ms bond muir. this is your concept. do better.

There's some chat that a couple of contestants either didn't show up, or left the competition early.

Odd, when for some it would have been perhaps the only opportunity to have a shot at some sort of international seat.

Sometimes in these sorts of scenarios, those with the final say, are more concerned about the driver's ability to listen, rather than their ability to operate the vehicle.

Driving was only part of the program.

There were other facets, such as fitness, media and sponsor presentations, theory and so on.

For someone like Ms Angelo for instance, whose physical fitness and driving ability is well-regarded back in Australia, she's obviously fallen flat on one or more aspects that don't directly relate to actually driving the car. With all due respect to Chelsea, she's always had trouble finding sponsorship, and has had to rely on key figures in the Australian motorsport landscape to keep her going.

Being able to sell yourself to potential sponsors, even though they're fully-funded drives (for now), would be a pretty important dot point in the selection criteria.

yeah exactly. i applaud people for continuing a cynical dialogue alongside the happy clappy patronising nonsense that’s coming out of the official channels.

she doesn’t sound very bright though. “driving in snow won’t prepare you for f3” really, i would have thought that’s exactly what it does.

but they’re probably right about vague selection procedure. the attitude test for starters is quite hard to quantify.

Is talent a must to reach F1? Unfortunately, not really. So it's understandable they are considering other more relevant factors.
