When Can-Am was in its prime in the late 1960s and early 1970s there was more innovation and diversity anong the cars, and it exciting road racing....until the Porsche cars and Donahue dominated everyone....
It is my only fear about the ALMS and the VAG dominance....only the hard-core will begin to turn up if every race is an Audi parade... I proposed a New LMP category that would have made them 1000 Kg., but the engine specs of Can-Am.... Heard from too many nay-sayers on it from the loyal readership on this site, but I still like the Idea!!!!! |

Nah, it just wouldn't work. Such a wide-open category is too impossible to police.

Of course I want CanAm back, though I never saw a race in the first place. What sportscar fan wouldn't want another series? The horsepower isn't what I want to see. I want unlimited aero, more like old IMSA.

CanAm was way cool. I still love to see the cars at the BRIC at Road America each summer. Standing on the starters bridge, while the cars fly by beneath you is a real rush. I miss IMSA too, but not the legendary storms that always seemed to accompany the events. Group 44 was always a treat.
ALMS is close, but there aren't enough cars in mix yet. |

I don't know anyone that wouldn't love to see the return of that breed of thundering beast.
P.S. - Tim, I like your 1000 kg LMP idea |

Look, the rule book will be as follows. The wieght before and after the race and other sessions will be 1000kg+ The engine will have 8 cyl +. The bodywork will enclose the wheels. The gear shifter will have a direct mechanical linkage to a manual 5-Speed gearbox. |

Heretical perhaps, but no. North America needs one sportscar championship, and the ALMS has made too much progress to throw it away. If you want to discuss changing regs for LMP1, fine. But the ALMS should stay (and should include the Daytona 24 Hours..!)

Sorry to be a party pooper but I agree wth BScneider fan. The last thing sports car racing needs is yet another series, spectacular though it would undoubtedly be. The health of sports car racing is always linked to the economic climate and I doubt North America could support another series. Let's get behind the ALMS!

Martin W, a hypothetical discussion about a long since gone series is not in any contempt of the ALMS. I assure we are all behind the ALMS as much as possible.
