Advice on returning to 'action'

Good news - my phsiotherapist has said my ankle has healed sufficiently enough for me to recommence marshalling

BUT

she has recommended I only do half days for a while.

Can anyone (especially some of the chief marshals on here) advise me if this would be possible, please? For those of you who don't know me, I mainly do incident/flags/rescue, and occassionally pits.

May I suggest you volunteer for Pits duty as that would give you the opportunity to 'rest' your ankle with the least disruption to the team you are working with?

No problem with half day as long as you have somewhere to go and rest for rest of day. You could always do half day in pits and half day sitting with pit buzzer, if doc says it's ok.
There's always the job sitting at base of race control at Brands warning people about the dodgy concrete.

How about marshalling the start-line for a bit?

That should read in the PITS I begin to FLAG behind, then have an INCIDENT and need a RESCUE unit to transport me to the medical centre.

SRB - How about Startline Marshalling.

Grid up and Sit Down, between 8 and 10 times at an average race meeting !!!
Unless of course there are red flags that require a two part race.

What shall I put you down for at Rockingham on May 15th.? How about half a day in the Pits and half a day on Startline?

John, can I turn up on the day and decide at Rockingham, please? I've got a really hectic few days beforehand, and I'm not too sure the ankle will be up to another day of work, but I'm planning to be there to spectate at least.

My big fear with going back to rescue is that is where my ankle potentially could take the most abuse - climbing in and out with quite a big step, crouching etc if we do get a shout, so I think that might have to wait a bit. Will also have to be careful climbing on and off pit walls, as I think my half day at Donington earlier aggravated it a fair bit.

There is always the option of doing pit exit lights - at Donington at least we have a chair in the box!

I know how you feel returning to marshalling after a bad leg injury. My leg is still recovering aftre breaking it badly at Aintree last November. I have decided to take a back seat from I.O.ing for at least the first half of the year and do some flagging. At least you can sit down between races and watch the incident teams dress oil etc! I flagged at the GT race at Donington a couple of weeks ago and explained to the Observer that i would not be able to stand up flagging for the whole of the 2 hour race. He quite understood and took the flag for the last 40 minutes. If you expain when you get on post then i'm sure it will be ok to rest when you need it. Having you there for half a day is better than not having you there at all!

Would you believe that in general we usually have three or more different blends of filter coffee in the med center... "Mudslide" is a particular favourite, although Jamaican Blue Mountain is my preferred coffee. Donuts have gone a little out of favour here, almond slices are high up on the list these days, and home made cake and biscuits are also featuring fairly highly. Although the garage has recently taken to stocking honey-glazed ring donuts which are rather nice.

As for sleeping, we generally don't do anything that vulgar in the unit......

Why sleep sitting up in a chair when there's plenty of stretchers and examination beds in the med center.... Oh, and pillows and blankies!

SRB, good thing about doing the Pits is that with a good cheif you can always rotate to a sit down task when you need too - Sheila says DP Pit Exit that is one option, another is for GT meetings we often need someone who can do the office paperwork - keeping track of who is in the car at any one time, (very handy at the big meetings -FIA/LMES) or even sit and compile an entry log for driver change races.

I've been doing telephones in race control this year. Its certainly different and I find that having been on the "other end" as flag/observer is a real help.
With my dodgy knees and recovering ankle, I might even continue doing this (unless the weather is really good, in which case I might just go back out on the bank for the odd day)!
And I'll sign up to the limp club as well!
