My Christmas list was Motoring News 1971-1974 and 1978-1979. And Santa's got them for me! I must have been a good boy this year.

Dan, I could also buy the whole of the 1980s but have nowhere to store them. They're in really good condition too. I might have to rent storage locally - or store them in Brighton.

The following comments from MNs in 1968 might clarify some points in some of the previous posts (hopefully, it does not muddy the waters). Chris Williams (Red Rose) damaged his car at the Martini Silverstone meeting. He was “pushed of at Copse by Per-Jonas Qvarnstrom … the fuel tank was ripped away and spilled its contents over all the electrics”. [MN 1-8-68] “Chris’ car is being rebuilt with a new frame (for type-number fans, it will be the first B15-type chassis) using the suspension from the damaged car.” Alan Rollinson’s car was expected to be rebuilt to the specification. [MN 15-8-68] At the Guards meeting at Brands Hatch Peter Gethin (Chris Williams was under doctor’s orders) won the second heat and final. “The car does not have a genuine monocoque centre section … in fact retains the same chassis. However sheet steel is welded to the sides of the cockpit and on the undertray and appear successful in making the chassis more rigid. ... A superb first outing for the brand-new Chevron which had not turned a wheel before Saturday.” [MN 5-9-68] MN 14-11-68 published a list of Chevron type numbers. The B9B is called the “plated” F3 chassis raced by Peter Gethin and Chris Williams. |

Early Chassis Interpretation
I just thought i,d post this diagram that i,ve put together as to how the early chassis/frame no's were originally identified when new.
I've used a non existant B10 as an example. Unfortunately most of these period cars from 1968 - 70 suffered front end damage somewhere in their current history, plus there is an abundance of blank chassis plates still around. In fact i still have a few in my toolbox from that particular period. Plus original chassis were totally written off & replaced & not always stamped. However ......... it does explain in pictorial form what is hard to explain in writing! |

That's very useful. On many of the cars that had frames built by Arch Motors (March, Brabham, Lotus, Palliser, etc, etc), there was no alignment between the AM number and the chassis number. Was this also the case on Chevrons? I expected to see no agreement but on a number of the B19s where I'm reasonably confident about their identity, the chassis number and the AM number agree. For example, B19-24 has AM number "AM 71 B19 24" and B19-29 has AM number "AM 71 B19 29".
Would you expect chassis numbers to match AM numbers on these early cars? |

Early Formula chassis no's.
Hi Allen,
This was one of the problems with the early single seaters. The B7 was totally built in house by Derek B & Paul O in 67 as you probobly know. Arch Motors were then entrusted for the subsequent B9s & 14s for 68. The problems were twofold. The frame nos didn't always tie up with the chassis nos & secondly there were even gaps with the nos of some of the 68 chassis nos. Things really didn't get sorted out until Dave Wilson became production manager on the behest of John Bridges and even then there were some anomolies. Things really started to settle down until 1970 when both am nos / chassis nos matched. |

Early Formula chassis no's.
Just to add to the above.
All cars sold in 68 whether it was a B9,10, or 14 were purely identical space frame chassis with aluminium fuel tanks & a G.R.P. Drivers seat. Except the B9B. To further confuse the issue the 3 14s built were given B9 No,s. To lessen the confusion in 1969 Dave Wilson revamped the chassis no,s Designating them F3,FB or FC. One such anomoly in 1969 showed that a friend of mine ...Barrie Smith ( who also purchased & raced a B8 from the previous year) decided to test the water in F3. Rather than purchase a new car he bought one of the Red Rose B9s second hand from the 68 season. Unfortunatly the car was written off on the first lap of the B.G.P. support race at Silverstone. Apparently the build records show that he purchased a B15 for the 69 season. This was totally untrue, although he told me he had enquired about one. Paul Owens was adamant that Barrie had a B15 for 69. Even factory build records can give false information. |

B9/14
Please find attached 1 or 2 rare original photos of Dick Smothers B14 at Laguna Seca in 1968,sentto me by a friend in the U.S.
Also some pictures of a B9 # F3.5.68 undergoing restoration on the West Coast. I might be sticking my neck out but it certainly looks like the 1off B9B as this # no is definately one of the original "Red Rose" cars used in F3 back in the 1968 season. ( Noting the semi stressed centre section & reconditioned fuel cell ) Apparently it found its way into the U.S. via Canada, the present owner not having much of an idea what it was. |

B9 in Japan
Here are some photos of a B9 F3 car currently up to last year being raced in Japan that were sent by a Japanese friend.
Unfortunately the # No is unknown at this time. |
