Formula One technical regulations, article 12.3

"All wheels must be made from an homogenous metallic material"

So carbon fibre wheels are not allowed.

Wouldn't the heat off an F1 brakes be a problem with carbon fibre, Brundle said that they can get up to 800 degrees C.

Academic if it isn't allowed in the regs. But brake heat would'nt transfer excessive heat from the friction components directly to the wheels.

Wheel construction does believe it or not contribute to lap times! Back to back tests at my sons team with the wheels Ferrari had been using exclusively last season against there own type were worth one and a half to two tenths of a second! That's a fact.

We had experienced this at the International FSA karting level, where we found 'measurable' time, as did others, by changing wheel rims (and hub carriers) in certain track conditions. Karts as with stiff cars benefit from wheel flexability or rigidity.

Carbon fiber doesn't mind heat too much.

Currently they use magnesium alloys which are very similar in weight to CF-only about 20-30% more if i'm guessing right(from info on GP bike wheels i've picked up over the years)
Interestingly honda used CF wheels on their GP bikes but changed back to Magnesium alloy sometime in the early nineties i believe.The CF ones were abit lighter but only lasted half as long and were much more expensive.
