Alfa Romeo 2003 driver line-up

Alfa 2003 driver line-up
ETCC 22/10/02

Reigning champion Alfa Romeo will be back in the 2003 FIA European Touring Car Championship with a strong three-car line up. The works Alfa 156 Gta cars will be run again by the Gta Racing Team Nordauto and driven by Nicola Larini, Gabriele Tarquini and Roberto Colciago. Fabrizio Giovanardi, freshly crowned 2002 FIA ETCC Drivers champion, will leave the team after eight successful seasons. Alfa Romeo and Nordauto did their best to fill the gap left by Giovanardi. The new formation is based on three aces of Touring Car competitions, each of them winner af a major national championship.

Larini, 38, is the only driver confirmed from this year’s line-up; a former F1 driver and Ferrari tester, he won the 1993 German Touring Car Championship for Alfa Romeo. Larini, who joined Nordauto in 1998, was runner-up in the 2001 FIA European Super Touring Championship, and third in the 2002 season. Tarquini, 40, also a former F1 driver, was crowned in the 1994 British Touring Car Championship at the wheel of an Alfa 155. He left the Italian make in 1997 to drive Honda cars in the German, British and European Touring Car Championship.

Recently he was called by Nordauto to drive the fourth car in the Donington Park ETCC round in, where he finished third in Race 1, scoring the points that gave Alfa the Manufacturers title. Colciago, 34, switched to Touring Cars in 1995, after a number of F3 successes (he was 1990 Italian champion). A regular race-winner for Audi in the Italian and European Super Touring Championships, he won two Swedish Touring Car titles in 2001 and 2002.

Larini and Tarquini will team together at the Macau Guia Race (17th November) at the wheel of two N.Technology Alfa Romeo 147s in Super Production specs. During the 2003 season, Nordauto might occasionally run a fourth car for 21-year-old Fabio Francia, who was 2001 Italian Super Production champion in an Alfa 147 and runner-up this year.

Meissner's comments

This brings more heat to the rumours that Giovanardi has signed for BMW since he is not in the Alfa Romeo team line up for 2003. Giovanardi has been reported to be in contact with both Ravaglia Motorsport and the Schnitzer team. Stay tuned for more news on this matter!

does this also mean that Yvan Muller will be in the BTCC again next year? it was rumoured he would join Nordauto for the ETCC next year, but now the drivers have been confirmed and he's not one of them.....what thinks ye?

Fabrizio was asked about a move to BMW on Eurosport on Sunday, and the only thing he did was laugh, and say the BMW is a very good car. The British title must be about the only major one he hasn't won yet, it would be very nice to see him here, though I think BMW will snap him up.

I think, Tarquini has the same class like Giovanardi and with Colciago
Alfa Nordauto will be even stronger than in 2002. But the others surely will be too

Why would Giovanardi want to leave a team that he has been with since 1995, won 6 straight championships with (97 Spanish, 98 & 99 Italian, 00 Euro Super Touring Cup, 01 & 02 ETC) and a car that is clearly the class of the field, for BMW, unless he see's the 30kg weight gain BMW has on others due to a h-pattern gearbox as a pretty handy advantage, or did he fall out with the team?

BTCC maybe a possibility, seems like BMW though.

This is something I'd never thought I'd hear after this season, Givonardi in a BMW. Givonardi and the Mullers in one team. 3 of the best on each side for next season. Givonardi has said he wants to do the BTCC before he retires.

Gio says that the BTCC is a possibility, but only with a serious manufacturer, that will enable him to challenge, and one that would give him the ability to get straight into the championship, so unless he has a Vauxhall or a Honda, I'd think his appearance in the BTCC is somewhere between 0 and 0.01 on the probability scale.

What about the signing of Colciago - don't forget about that.

He is really fast.

But I wonder if the STCC Audi Super 2000 project may now be in doubt after Colciago has left? Or will he still be in the STCC in 2003?

Ever seen how "active" Tarquini is behind the wheel?

Great driving style, though I wonder if he over-drives a lot of the time.
